The World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba is in the books which now sets the stage for the Hewlett Packard Enterprise Houston Open. The Houston Open has a history dating back to 1946 when Byron Nelson claimed the first trophy. Last year Carlos Ortiz beat both Dustin Johnson and Japan Hideki Matsuyama by two strokes for the win.
Ortiz is back to defend his title against a field that includes some heavy hitters including Brooks Koepka, Tony Finau, Tyrrell Hatton, Patrick Reed, and Sam Burns. Plenty of players are looking for points and payoffs with only a handful of dates before the schedule loosens up during Christmas and the Holidays.
It’s also an event where there are plenty of players, aka value picks, down the odds list that can pull off a win with a strong showing. Here are the favorites coming in at +2200 and under to win the 2021 Hewlett Packard Enterprise Houston Open outright according to Intertops.
Sam Burns +1600
Scottie Scheffler +1800
Sungjae Im +2200
Cameron Smith +2200

Memorial Park Golf Course is a public course that is a stunner. The venue has long been a beautiful venue first used as Camp Logan during WWI. The course started as a nine-hole set of links which was redesigned by John Bredemus 85 years ago.
Today, some say the course has characteristics similar to Augusta National. The fairways can play tight, landing zones are tricky, and bunkers will swallow a ball. That is if a tee shot goes wild. If not, then players should be safe to make it to the greens with little trouble. Still, there are plenty of areas where scrambling skills will come in handy. Greens are Tifdwarf grass while fairways are Bermuda.
Players will love the short trimmed surface surrounding the greens at Memorial. The entire set of links was completely renovated in 2020 under the direction of Tom Doak and Brooks Koepka.
2021 Houston Open Predictions
Scottie Scheffler +1800
Scottie Scheffler finished sole 4th place last week at Mayakoba by going 17 under in a tough field that saw Viktor Hovland card the win at 23 under. Still, Scheffler yielded a steady hand on his full bag which included his putter. Scheffler can take advantage of that skill again with the trimmed areas surrounding the greens at Memorial.
Brooks Koepka +3000
Brooks Koepka has all of the skills needed to get back on the winning track. He’s still looking different after his injury problems heading into last season. Last year he finished T5 here and showed he could still carve up a course. Koepka also has the scrambling touch that could pay off this week.
Aaron Wise +3300
Aaron Wise posted two rounds of 65 last year to finish T5 at this tournament. Wise is also playing with a strong putter and his short game has been strong. He finished T5 at the CJ Cup and T8 at the Shriners Open.
Others: Tony Finau (+2500) has been close to winning all summer long and played well during the Ryder Cup. If his putter comes along this week he could be a contender on Sunday. Gary Woodland (+8000) has made been slightly inconsistent as of late but if he’s on point with his irons and putter he could carve up the field.
