The Kansas City Chiefs had a dominant outing in 2020, finishing 14-2 on the season. They head into the playoffs under Head Coach Andy Reid. With the team coming off a Super Bowl win the year before, they became heavy favorites. They first faced the Cleveland Browns in the Divisional Round of the NFL playoffs. A close win, 22-17 sent the Chiefs to the AFC Championship game.
They faced off against the Buffalo Bills who were having a spectacular year themselves. The two traded blows throughout the game, with the Chiefs taking a 38-24 victory. This win crowned the Chiefs as AFC Champion and sent them to the Super Bowl. QB Patrick Mahomes faced a familiar face again, this time on a different team. The Chiefs took on Tom Brady and his new team, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. After an uncharacteristic game for the Chiefs, they lost the game 31-9. Now the Chiefs look to reclaim the title of the best team again in 2021. Let’s go over what we should expect from the former champions.
2021 Kansas City Chiefs Futures Betting Odds
Kansas City Chiefs Odds to Win the Super Bowl: +500
Kansas City Chiefs AFC Championship Odds: +250
Kansas City Chiefs Win Totals Odds: Over 12 (-125) vs. Under 12 (-125)
Kansas City Chiefs Odds to Win AFC West: -250
The Kansas City Chiefs are pretty much guaranteed to return back to the playoffs, barring disaster. This is one of the most offensively dominant teams in the league, the problem was a lack of an offensive line. The Chiefs could’ve easily claimed another Super Bowl title had they did more to protect Patrick Mahomes. The question now isn’t if they’ll make the playoffs but how deep can they go? As one of the most all-around talented teams in the league, the answer is far.
The Chiefs have the AFC on lock, but there are some up-and-coming teams that could steal that title. I’d leave them off my AFC Championship wagers but I’d definitely take them to win the AFC West. They come in as -335 favorites to win the division, pretty much a guaranteed winner. The win total odds are good too, with seventeen games, the Chiefs would have to win 13 to hit the over. This is a good bet due to the additions they’ve made to the offensive line in the offseason.
2021 Kansas City Chiefs Offseason Grade: B+
Key Additions: (G, Kyle Long), (G, Joe Thuney), (T, Orlando Brown), (RB, Jerick McKinnon)
Key Departures: NONE
The Chiefs addressed their biggest flaw in the 2020 season, the offensive line. For a team so heavily reliant on offensive production, this is huge. The additions of Kyle Long and Joe Thuney at guard will revamp the offensive line. What this means is the offense will look similar to the offense from 2019, the same year they won the Super Bowl.
The question now shifts to the defense which has struggled against dynamic offenses. The Chiefs have signed a few defensive backs but their capability is still in question. Andy Reid, the head coach of the Chiefs is clearly more dedicated to offense. This should play out fine as long as the offense can carry part of the burden for the defense.
Kansas City Chiefs Preview 2021
This year we should have high expectations for the Kansas City Chiefs. The new offensive line with Long and Thuney should prove much better than the previous lineup. Bringing in two studs to protect Patrick Mahomes is a recipe for success. The offense of the Chiefs this year will be a force in the AFC, the only lingering question is on defense. If the coaching staff can come up with some schemes to help the secondary, Kansas City could easily take the AFC.
Look for the Chiefs to have a strong 2021, perhaps even returning to the Super Bowl this season. They have the best odds to win it all in the entire NFL, with the Buccaneers following closely behind. Remember though, Tom Brady and the Buccaneers have nearly the same odds to win it all this year as well.
Kansas City Chiefs 2021 Futures Best Bets
First off, don’t waste any time, and be sure to take them to win the AFC West. There isn’t a team in the division able to compete with the Chiefs. Kansas City is a -335 favorite, the closest team being the Denver Broncos at +600.
Another sure pick is the over on the win total. Kansas City has a promising schedule this year and is nearly guaranteed six wins just based on their divisional games. Don’t be shy to take them to win it all this year either, just remember the Buccaneers had a strong offseason as well.
