2021 New York Jets Team Preview, Odds, and Predictions

The New York Jets have run into multiple seasons of misfortune. Last season, although rough for every team, was especially hard on the Jets. They went into the season hoping they could improve on their 7-9 record from 2019. Or that they could even make their way into the playoffs for the first time since 2010. Instead, the team had a long fall, all the way to the bottom of the AFC East in 2020. The team finished with an abysmal 2-14 record and had very little to look forward to when the year closed.

The 2-14 record was the worst record the team had since 1996, a season in which they finished 1-15. The Jets season came to a close in a loss to the New England Patriots, an AFC East rival. This, and the overall season, prompted the New York Jets to move on from Adam Gase as head coach. Now the Jets prepare themselves for a new season under a different head coach, Robert Saleh. Could the Jets have a breakout year in 2021, or should we expect another lackluster season?

The term “slim to none” comes to mind when thinking about the New York Jets making the playoffs. There’s a lot left for this team to do before they come anywhere near a playoff berth. Not to mention, carving through the AFC East won’t be a fun task. They still have to deal with the New England Patriots, who have the best coach in NFL history.

The Buffalo Bills are only a few steps away from a Super Bowl title. We can’t forget the Miami Dolphins, who finished with a 10-6 record in 2020. The fact is, New York won’t be able to win enough divisional games to enter the playoffs.

When looking at the odds, the New York Jets are last or nearly last in every category. They have +10000 odds to win the Super Bowl. It’d be great winnings if they did but the likelihood of them even making the playoffs is low. They have the worst odds to win the AFC East. This makes sense due to the teams in the AFC East. Their wins total is at six, which is something to look at considering they’re expected to have a better season.

If you’re looking to make some money on the Jets, here’s where you can, especially with some of their additions in the offseason.

2021 New York Jets Offseason Grade: C+

Key Additions: (WR, Corey Davis), (DT, Sheldon Rankins), (RB, Tevin Coleman)

Key Departures: (S, Jordyn Peters)

It could be argued that the grade for their offseason could be higher, especially considering the draft. However, the free agents they picked up aren’t notable signings aside from Sheldon Rankins. Corey Davis ended up being an afterthought in Tennessee and has unreliable hands. Tevin Coleman was pushed out of the spotlight in Atlanta, and their first-round draft pick is having trouble in camp.

They took Zach Wilson as the number two pick in the NFL Draft. However, that same number two pick is having a rough go in training camp. Head Coach Robert Saleh ensured the media that Wilson is learning, but at what rate? It’s expected that come Week 1, he’ll be the starting quarterback, but is he ready? As it stands, with us only being a few weeks out, we think not.

New York Jets 2021 Preview

The Jets are on a rebuilding course, whether they want to believe it or not. Robert Saleh has his work cut out for him to mold this team into the way he sees fit. The talent is there, but the leadership is another question. We also feel that Zach Wilson is getting pushed into the starting role too quickly. This is similar to what they did only a few seasons ago with Sam Darnold. Overall, don’t expect too much from the Jets this season.

New York Jets Futures Best Bets

Clearly, we shouldn’t have to tell you not to bet on the Jets to win the Super Bowl. The other championship titles are out of the question as well. However, there is one category you can capitalize on. With the total at 6 wins, we think the best futures bet on the New York Jets is to take the under. They have an unforgiving schedule this season that’ll pit them against some tough teams.

At best, we believe the Jets can win five games. What we see being more likely is them finishing with a four-win season.
