2021 Oklahoma State Cowboys Team Preview, Odds, and Predictions

The Oklahoma State Cowboys finished with an 8-3 record and went 6-3 in the Big 12 last season. With large aspirations heading into the season, Coach Mike Gundy has his work cut out for him. The Cowboys’ aspirations aren’t misguided though as they won the Cheez-It Bowl in 2020. With big wins over Iowa State and Miami, Oklahoma State should be on everyone’s watchlist.

The Cowboys head into the 2021 season with key recruits, making them one of the strongest teams in the Big 12. They have the fourth-best odds to win the Big 12 this year, right behind Texas, Iowa State, and Oklahoma. Before they can win the Big 12, the Cowboys need to separate themselves from Texas and the Iowa State Cyclones. Fortunately for Oklahoma State, both of those teams are on their schedule this year.

CFB Spreads

Oklahoma State had a successful year last season with an 8-3 record, giving bettors a reason to trust them. The only problem is, they have a very tough schedule in front of them. Not only is Iowa State and Texas on the schedule but Oklahoma is their last game. With these tough matchups in front of them, the margin of error is 0.

If they were to lose those three they’d be able to give up two more before going under the win total. The best news for the Cowboys is they beat Iowa State last year. As far as a National Championship contender, Oklahoma State has a long way to go. With the Sooners occupying the same conference as them, the Cowboys aren’t a good choice as Conference Champion either.

2021 Oklahoma State Cowboys Offseason Grade: B+

Key Additions: (WR, Talyn Shettron), (QB, Garrett Rangel), (RB, C.J. Brown), (RB, Braylin Presley), (RB, Ollie Gordon)

Key Departures: (RB, Chuba Hubbard), (WR, Tylan Wallace), (DB, Rodarius Williams)

The Cowboys lost their feature-back in the 2021 NFL Draft but did a good job acquiring three recruits. The trio of Brown, Presley, and Gordon, all scored with ranks of 80 and above. Losing a running back is detrimental to any offense but the Cowboys found three good ones. Depending on who gets the nod at starter, we could see a lethal backfield in the Big 12. Although the Cowboys will miss him, this group will be great replacements for RB Chuba Hubbard.

Oklahoma State also found another future star in the wide receiver Talyn Shettron. Shettron will likely fill the hole left by WR Tylan Wallace who was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens. Shettron has an 88 score heading into the season and will likely be a primary target. This will give Oklahoma State a passing attack to go along with their runners. Overall, the Cowboys did a good job filling the roles left open by the NFL Draft. The only question now is how well these players will be implemented.

Oklahoma State Cowboys Preview 2021

The Cowboys have an opportunity to overtake two opponents in the Big 12 this year. Last season, they showed they can defeat Iowa State but couldn’t beat Texas. Both Texas and Iowa State had a good recruiting year but don’t count Oklahoma State out just yet. They narrowly lost in overtime to Texas last season and have a strong recruiting class this year.

Expect another winning season from the Cowboys in 2021, even with them falling short of taking the Big 12. This team has huge potential and did the work in the offseason to bring in some talented players.

Oklahoma State Cowboys Futures Best Bets

The best bet for Oklahoma State right now is taking the over 7.5 win total. This team could lose three of their toughest games and still have two games to surrender. If you could take them to beat Iowa State this year that’d be a great bet as well.

Leave them out of your National Champion and Conference Champion picks though, they aren’t quite ready yet. This team has a high ceiling though so you can be sure to expect more from them in the future.
