The Seattle Seahawks fly into the 2021 season with one thing on their mind, getting back to the 2022 Super Bowl. Their last appearance was in 2014 when a fatal mistake in playcalling cost the Seahawks a victory. Since then, the Seattle Seahawks have been just slightly over mediocre. Sure they visit the playoffs relatively often, but it doesn’t amount to much at the end of it. They’ve struggled winning playoff games and haven’t sniffed the Super Bowl in seven years.
This is all with a generational talent at quarterback in Russell Wilson and a great head coach in Pete Carroll. Last season, they finished with a 12-4 record, at the top of the NFC West. However, once in the playoffs, they were taken down by the second-place team in the NFC West. The Los Angeles Rams beat the Seahawks 30-20 and sent Seattle back to the drawing board. This makes it a tough year for Seattle, as players and fans want more from them in 2021. A playoff this year won’t cut it, and anything less than that could warrant some terminations.
2021 Seattle Seahawks Futures Betting Odds
Seattle Seahawks Super Bowl Champion Odds: +2500
Seattle Seahawks NFC Champion Odds: +1100
Seattle Seahawks NFC West Champion Odds: +275
Seattle Seahawks Win Totals Odds: Over 9.5 (-130) / Under 9.5 (+100)
As one of the premier teams in the NFC for some time, Seattle is a favorite to head back to the playoffs. The question is, in what capacity will they be able to perform? They have a dynamic passing attack with one of the best quarterbacks in the league. They have arguably the most physical and fastest wide receivers in the NFL. They also have a record-setting coach that has a full-reign of the team. Unfortunately, even with all of this, they still disappoint the fans every year once they’ve made the playoffs.
This season, they have the third-best odds to win the NFC West, and rightfully so. The remaining teams in the division have grown over the last five years, while Seattle stays stagnant. To Seattle’s credit, they split games with two of the better teams in the division but swept the 49ers. That’d be a better stat if most of the 49ers starters were actually playing during the 2020 season. This season, even the San Francisco 49ers come in with better odds to win the NFC West than the Seahawks. This leads us to believe it, even the sportsbooks are losing faith in Seattle.
2021 Seattle Seahawks Offseason Grade: C+
Key Additions: (DE, Aldon Smith), (OG, Kyle Fuller), (DE, Carlos Dunlap)
Key Departures: (TE, Greg Olsen), (OL, Chance Warmack), (OLB, Bruce Irvin)
Unfortunately for the Seattle Seahawks, they ended the NFL draft having only three picks. None of those picks were in the first round. Instead, they had a late second round, a late fourth, and a late sixth. This left the team with plenty of moves to make in the offseason if they wanted an improved 2021. We will say their ability to go out and get an edge rusher like Aldon Smith will prove beneficial.
It seems like they didn’t put much effort into the offense, though, aside from Kyle Fuller. Fuller will give Russell Wilson some much-needed protection after being under duress for the entire 2020 season. The departure of seasoned veteran Greg Olsen is quite a hit. Being fair to the Seahawks, Olsen retired, so there isn’t much they could do there. As it stands, heading into the season, the 2021 Seahawks look similar to the 2020 roster.
Seattle Seahawks 2021 Preview
The way it looks is we’ll see much of the same in 2021 from the Seahawks as we did in 2020. No big signings, no personnel changes, just the same old Seahawks. Now, this does bring a certain amount of consistency to the team. Unfortunately, it’s the wrong kind of consistency, especially in a rapidly improving division.
The teams surrounding Seattle this year in the NFC West are making the right moves. The NFL as a whole is changing, but the Seahawks are clinging to their ways from 2013 when they won it all. This sets a dangerous precedence for the team, as they run the risk of being left in the past. Russell Wilson won’t be this good forever, and much like Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay is wasting time in Seattle.
Seattle Seahawks Futures Best Bets
Although it’s an underdog bet, the best futures bet for the Seahawks is the under on the win total. The win total is set at 9.5, meaning the Seahawks would have to win ten games. We don’t see this stagnant team winning ten games, especially with the teams in their division and conference.
