It’s the final season for the BYU Cougars as an independent. Next season, the Cougars will join the Big 12. Head coach Kalani Sitake’s program has been on the rise with a 21-4 record over the last two seasons.
BYU took on nearly half of the Pac-12 last season – five teams – and won each time. Only two programs from the Pac-12 will face the Cougars in 2022.
Sitake has a ton of talent back from last year’s team that lost to UAB 31-28 in the Independence Bowl. Can he put together another double-digit win total?

Last Season
The Cougars went 10-3 last season starting the year off with three straight wins over the Pac-12 – Arizona, Utah, and Arizona State. BYU won its first five games before back-to-back losses to Boise State and Baylor.
The offense was productive scoring 33.1 points per game and averaging 452.6 yards per game. The defense struggle through some injuries but was good enough to keep the Cougars in every game.
BYU Key Losses Heading Into 2022
The biggest loss for the Cougars is record-setting RB Tyler Allgeier. The Cougars RB set a single-season school rushing record with 1,601 yards and 23 touchdowns last season. He was a fifth-round draft pick of the Atlanta Falcons.
The Cougars only lose three starters from their defense last season and four from the 2021 offense.
2022 BYU Cougars Team Preview
Big things are expected from the Cougars offense in 2022. Offensive coordinator Aaron Roderick returns with seven starters including QB Javen Hall. Hall replaced New York Jets starter Zach Wilson last season and did an admirable job. He threw for 2,583 yards and 20 touchdowns.
All three wide receivers return as well as TE Isaac Rex (6-6, 247). Three of five starters return on the offensive line. On defense, all three linebackers are back as well as eight starters total. Malik Moore, a three-year starter at free safety, returns to anchor the secondary. If the Cougars defense can stay healthy, it can be very good.
2022 BYU Football Schedule
The Cougars aren’t afraid to play anyone and the 2022 schedule shows it. BYU will face Baylor again, but this time at home. They will travel to Notre Dame and get up-and-coming Arkansas at home. The Cougars play at Boise State and at Stanford in the final three weeks of the regular season.
The schedule has a strong mix of outstanding competition and some weeks where the Cougars will undoubtedly be the better of the two teams on the field.
2022 BYU Cougars Regular Season Win Total Prediction
BYU travels to South Florida to start the season. The Bulls have won a total of three games in the past two seasons. Utah State and Utah Tech (formerly Dixie State) are no match for the Cougars. BYU does travel to Liberty and that could present some problems. Going to Oregon in Week 3 could also be a roadblock.
Getting Baylor and Arkansas at home is a huge advantage. This Cougars team has tons of experience too, which is why the Cougars rack up a third straight 10-plus-win season.
