The 2021 Indianapolis Colts lost four of their first five games. When all seemed lost, head coach Frank Reich and company righted the ship and won five of the next six games and eight of the next ten. With the postseason on the line, the Colts dropped their final two regular season games and wound up 9-8.
The Colts worked some major moves over the offseason, primarily at the key position on the field – quarterback. A handful of other changes will make an already good defense even better. Can the Colts get back to the postseason in 2022?

OVER 9.5 (-170)
UNDER 9.5 (+140)
Last Season
Much of the Colts dysfunction last season was on the offensive side of the ball, particularly the passing game. Indy had the NFL’s second-best running game (149.4 ypg) last season, but the passing game ranked 26th. That led to the end of the Carson Wentz experiment.
The defense was solid finishing tied for ninth in scoring allowing opponents 21.5 points per game. The Colts tied for the third-most interceptions (19) in the NFL. That helped Indianapolis to the NFL’s best turnover differential – +14.
Colts Key Losses Heading Into 2022
It’s a key loss in the fact that the Colts replaced Wentz with a future Hall of Famer at quarterback. Wentz was traded to Washington allowing Indy to bring in former Atlanta star Matt Ryan. The bigger losses are OT Eric Fisher, WR T.Y. Hilton, WR Zach Pascal, and corners Rock Ya-Sin and Xavier Rhodes.
The Colts biggest loss might be defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus. He is now the head coach of the Chicago Bears.
2022 Indianapolis Colts Team Preview
With Ryan in place as the Colts quarterback, the offense should be much better. Jonathan Taylor ran for 1,811 yards and 18 touchdowns to lead the NFL. The ability to run the football will open up the passing game for Ryan. The Colts have a young receiving corps that features Michael Pittman Jr., Parris Campbell, and rookie Alec Pierce, a second-round draft pick from Cincinnati.
Yannick Ngakoue was acquired from Las Vegas and will start opposite Kwity Paye at defensive end. Signing CB Stephon Gilmore takes the Colts defense up a notch from last season and new defensive coordinator Gus Bradley will devise schemes to take advantage of what the Colts do best.
2022 Indianapolis Colts Schedule
Playing in the AFC South is usually good for at least four wins (Houston, Jacksonville). With Ryan at quarterback, the Colts should rival the Titans for control of the division. Indy will face the AFC West, which could be the NFL’s best division this year. That represents some tough games against the Chiefs, Broncos, and Chargers. The Chiefs and Chargers games are at home.
The Colts cross over to play the NFC East, which could be the weakest division in football. Indy does have to play at Dallas, but Washington and Philadelphia are at home. Those games will only help the Colts get to 10 wins.
2022 Colts Regular Season Win Total Prediction
The Colts went 4-12 in 2017 and then followed in 2018 with a 10-6 mark under then new head coach Frank Reich. In 2019, Indy went 7-9 but followed that season up with an 11-5 campaign in 2020. After last year’s 9-8 season, the Colts have reloaded in 2022.
With Ryan at quarterback, the offense will be even better. With some new faces on defense, that unit will be better as well. The Colts have all of the key pieces to push this win total Over.
