After quarterback, edge rusher is the next most coveted position in the NFL. Teams looking to get after quarterbacks have some quality prospects at the top of the board.
After the quarterback on offense, teams look next for wide receivers. Last year, three went in the first ten picks of the 2021 NFL draft.
Ja’Marr Chase was reunited with his college teammate QB Joe Burrow in Cincinnati and became the 2021 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year.
Are there any wide receivers in this draft class that could do the same? Here are the 2022 NFL draft first wide receiver selected odds and picks.
Two-Horse Race
Ohio State’s Garrett Wilson is the overall betting favorite at +125 to go first. He’s followed by USC’s Drake London at +130. No other prospect is given better than +400 odds.
Wilson may be the most complete receiver in the class, but he is not the biggest (6-feet) nor is he the fastest (4.38 in the 40-yard dash). He is a polished route runner and he’s a guy that can moved all over the offense to create plays. Think Deebo Samuel in San Francisco.
London is the prototypical big NFL receiver. He’s 6-4 and weighs 220 pounds. He’s a big-time athlete. London even played basketball for a spell at USC. The issue with him is that he suffered a broken ankle near the end of last season.
Still, London wound up with 88 receptions for 1,084 yards and won the Pac-12’s Offensive Player of the Year award. Teams looking for a big receiver that will win jump ball situations will cast their eyes on London.
The Wild Card
Jameson Williams was actually a Buckeye with Wilson and NFL prospect Chris Olave. Williams played in all 14 games in 2019, but decided to transfer to Alabama. Last season, he caught 79 passes for 1,572 yards and 15 touchdowns.
He might be the most explosive receiver in this draft class. Williams is 6-2 and weighs right around 190. He suffered a torn ACL in the national championship game against Georgia. That is the only reason why teams may shy away from drafting Williams.
Sleeper?
Olave is almost the mirror image of his teammate Wilson. He is 6-1 and weighed in at 189 at the combine. He ran the 40 in 4.39 and has plenty of speed. The questions surrounding Olave include a limited route tree and some strength issues. That’s why he is listed at +1800.
2022 NFL Draft 1st WR Selected Prediction
If Washington doesn’t trade for a big-time receiver – they were reportedly interested in Seattle’s D.K. Metcalf – they have their eyes set on London. The thing is that both the Falcons and Jets need a receiver as well.
Both teams, should they draft a wide receiver, are more likely to go with Wilson. He’s healthy and checks all the boxes.
