2022 Ohio State Buckeyes Win Total Odds and Picks

After an upset loss to Big Ten rival Michigan, Ohio State failed to make the conference championship game and the College Football Playoff in 2021. The Buckeyes have had reservations for each the last few years.

Head coach Ryan Day will try and regroup after an 11-2 campaign. Part of the problem last year was a defense that allowed 22.8 points per game. That’s uncharacteristic for an Ohio State defense.

Day hired new defensive coordinator JIm Knowles, who worked his magic last year at Oklahoma State. With Heisman Trophy favorite C.J. Stroud running the Buckeyes high-powered offense, Day might find his Buckeyes right back in the thick of the Big Ten and CFP races in 2022.

Last Season

The Buckeyes lost in Week 2 last year to Oregon, dropping a 35-28 decision. Day and Ohio State rallied to win nine straight before the loss to Michigan. The Buckeyes had one of the top scoring offenses in the nation behind Stroud who finished as the Big Ten’s Offensive Player of the Year.

The issue for Ohio State was a defense that gave up over 30 points on five separate occasions. One of those was the season-ending Rose Bowl where Stroud set a record with 573 passing yards. The Buckeyes needed all of Stroud’s passing yards plus the six touchdowns he threw to beat Utah 48-45.

Buckeyes Key Losses Heading Into 2022

The biggest losses for the Buckeyes come on offense where Ohio State lost not one, but two first-round NFL draft picks at wide receiver. Garrett Wilson and Chris Olave have taken their talents to the league, but the best of the three may be Jaxson Smith-Njigba.

In that Rose Bowl without Wilson and Olave, Smith-Njigbal caught 15 passes for 347 yards and three touchdowns. Suffice to say, the Buckeyes should be fine without Wilson and Olave. The Buckeyes must also replace two offensive linemen.

Stroud is the favorite to win this year’s Heisman after a season in which he threw for 4,435 yards and 44 touchdowns. He completed 71.9 percent of his passes and he is joined by Smith- Njigba and RB TreyVeon Henderson.

The offensive line has future NFL OT Paris Johnson and massive Dawand Jones (6-8, 360) returning. Jack Sawyer is the next great Buckeyes pass rusher. Denzel Burke and Cameron Brown are lockdown corners.

2022 Ohio State Football Schedule

The 2022 campaign kicks off with a doozy. Ohio State welcomes Notre Dame to Columbus on Sept. 3 for the season opener. Arkansas State and Toledo are the other non-conference games before the Big Ten season kicks off.

There will be the yearly MIchigan State, Penn State, and rival Michigan games. The Buckeyes also crossover and get Wisconsin and Iowa, but both games are at home.

2022 Buckeyes Regular Season Win Total Prediction

The Buckeyes have owned the Big Ten for the better part of the last decade, A win over Notre Dame will go a long way to securing a berth in the CFP. Arkansas State and Toledo will provide the necessary prelude to the Big Ten schedule.

It starts with a tough one with Wisconsin, but it’s at home. The Buckeyes don’t lose many Big Ten games and you can bet they will want revenge on Michigan. Ohio State will have one of the best offenses led by one of the best quarterbacks in the country.

Minus the COVID-shortened 2020 season, Ohio State has nine straight double-digit victory seasons. There is every reason to believe they will do it again.
