For the first time since 2004, the Pittsburgh Steelers will have a starting quarterback not named Ben Roethlisberger. The Steelers made some offseason moves to address the position and look to improve upon last year’s 9-7-1 mark that netted the organization another playoff berth.
Long-time head coach Mike Tomlin has never had a losing season with the Steelers. While nearly all the so-called experts expect a less-than-stellar season from the Black-and-Gold, there is reason for the Steelers to be hopeful.

Last Season
Pittsburgh started last season with a shocker, winning at Buffalo 23-16. They followed that up with three straight losses before four straight wins. A tie at home against Detroit actually helped the Steelers earn a playoff spot last year. The Steelers finished 2021 with four wins in their final six games, including victories over Tennessee and two wins over Baltimore.
The normally stellar Pittsburgh defense was dead last in the NFL against the run. They were No. 9 against the pass thanks, in large part, to the performance of NFL Defensive Player of the Year T.J. Watt. The Steelers recorded 55 sacks, which led the NFL.
Steelers Key Losses Heading Into 2022
The defense lost LB Taco Charlton to New Orleans and CB Joe Haden is unlikely to be re-signed. The big losses were at WR where JuJu Smith-Schuster, James Washington, and Ray-Ray McCloud are all gone.
Smith-Schuster is now in Kansas City, the team that eliminated Pittsburgh from the postseason last year.
2022 Pittsburgh Steelers Team Preview
The Steelers addressed the quarterback situation by bringing in former Bears starter and Bills backup Mitchell Trubisky. Pittsburgh then drafted Kenny Pickett who played his college football at the University of Pittsburgh. Both guys will be given the opportunity to win the starting job.
To help beef up the defense, the Steelers added CB Levi Wallace and LB Myles Jack. Both players will start for the Steelers. Center Mason Cole was added from Minnesota. He will start and anchor an offensive line that will open holes for 1,000-yard rusher Najee Harris.
2022 Pittsburgh Steelers Schedule
The problem for Pittsburgh is that they play in the AFC North. That means two games against Super Bowl participant Cincinnati as well as two more against rival Baltimore. Cleveland is no pushover either. That’s six tough games.
The Steelers play at Buffalo again and then follow that game up with Tampa Bay at home. Pittsburgh travels to Indianapolis for a Monday night game in November. They do have some winnable games, but several are on the road which will make things more difficult.
2022 Steelers Regular Season Win Total Prediction
With a new starting quarterback – and potentially a rookie starting quarterback – it’s hard to see the Steelers having much success. The defense will be better and Tomlin just has a knack for winning games.
He hasn’t had a losing season yet. Give Pittsburgh a 3-3 record in the division. They’ll win a game they shouldn’t and lose one they shouldn’t. Getting five more wins to hit this win total will happen regardless of who starts at quarterback.
