Just one more season. Tom Brady retired after the 2021 season then abruptly ended his retirement just before free agency started. It might have been the 30-27 loss to the Rams in the NFC playoffs that left a bad taste in Brady’s mouth. He didn’t want it to end like that, so he’s back for a 23rd NFL season.
After going 13-4, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will also have a new head coach. Todd Bowles takes over for Bruce Arians who will still be involved in the Bucs front office. The bulk of the roster returns as well for Tampa Bay, one of the top five favorites to win this year’s Super Bowl. With a 45-year-old quarterback, can the Bucs pull it off?

Tampa Bay started the 2021 season 6-1. Remember, the Bucs had won the Super Bowl the year before. They dropped two in a row at midseason then ended the regular season on a 7-1 run. The Bucs won the division and beat Philadelphia in their first playoff game. The Rams then ended Tampa Bay’s season the following week.
Tampa Bay had the best passing offense in the NFL (307.6 ypg) and Brady led the league in passing yards (5,316) and completions (485). The Bucs were second in scoring averaging 30.1 points per game and were virtually unstoppable on offense in 2021.
Buccaneers Key Losses Heading Into 2022
The Bucs did lose a couple key pieces of the puzzle in the offseason. A pair of guards, Alex Cappa and Ali Marpet, are no longer with the team. Marpet retired and Cappa is now in Cincinnati. Tight end O.J.
Howard is in Buffalo and RB Ronald Jones II has a new home in Kansas City. Those moves will affect the Bucs depth on offense.
Jason Pierre-Paul and Ndamukong Suh are both closer to the ends of their careers. Both were not re- signed in the offseason.
2022 Tampa Bay Buccaneers Team Preview
Tampa Bay added G Shaq Mason from New England in the offseason. He will start as will rookie DT Logan Hall. Hall was a second-round pick and fills an immediate need on the Bucs defensive front.
Anytime Tom Brady lines up at quarterback, the Bucs have a chance. The offense doesn’t lose much. In fact, it gains WR Russell Gage to operate alongside Chris Godwin (who returns from injury) and Mike Evans. Both Godwin (1,103) and Evans (1,035) went over 1,000 yards receiving last year.
2022 Tampa Bay Buccaneers Schedule
Playing in the NFC South has its advantages, especially when New Orleans no longer has Drew Brees at quarterback. Interestingly, the Bucs went 4-2 in the division last year. Both losses were to the Saints.
The Bucs will be tested early. They get Green Bay and Kansas City back-to-back in September. Both games are at home. In early November, they will face the Rams. That game is also at home. In mid- December, the Bengals come to Tampa.
2022 Buccaneers Regular Season Win Total Prediction
The Bucs should record another winning record in the division. They do face a number of tough opponents, but most of the games are at home. While home field advantage may be overrated in the NFL, it sure helps.
With Brady at quarterback operating what could be the NFL’s best offense and Bowles calling a very good Bucs’ defense, another 13-4 campaign is certainly attainable.
