France heads into the 2022 World Cup as the defending champion, having triumphed in Russia four years ago. Didier Deschamps’ men find themselves in Group D, alongside Denmark, Australia and Tunisia.
You probably won’t be surprised to learn that France is the bookies’ clear favorite to win Group D. Still, Denmark, Australia and Tunisia will be confident of causing an upset. It’s time to go over the ins and outs of all four teams.
France World Cup Preview 2022
Odds to Win Group D: -200
Granted, France is the reigning World Cup champion, but Les Blues’ preparations for this year’s tournament have not been great to say the least.
Didier Deschamps’ boys only managed to win one of their six Nations League games earlier this year, suffering three defeats along the way. Funnily enough, two of those defeats came against Denmark.
We all know that France boasts one of the strongest squads in world soccer, with Kylian Mbappe and Karim Benzema spearheading a ruthless attack. Still, they could struggle to win Group D with Denmark lurking in the shadows.
Denmark World Cup Preview 2022
Odds to Win Group D: +225
Denmark will be brimming with belief after claiming back-to-back wins over France. Following a 2-1 victory in Paris, the Red and Whites secured a 2-0 triumph in Copenhagen back in September.
The Danes have won five of their last seven games in all competitions, keeping three clean sheets. With Christian Eriksen back to his phenomenal best, they will fancy their chances of outperforming France in Group D.
Let’s not forget that Kasper Hjulmand’s men won nine of their ten World Cup qualifiers, scoring 30 goals while conceding just three. Denmark could prove to be the surprise package of the tournament.
Australia World Cup Preview 2022
Odds to Win Group D: +1400
The Socceroos booked their place in the World Cup via the play-offs. After beating the United Arab Emirates 2-1, they edged out Peru on penalties to punch their ticket to Qatar.
Since then, they have claimed back-to-back victories against New Zealand. However, defeats to Japan and Saudi Arabia earlier this year suggest that Australia won’t be able to compete with the top teams in Qatar.
The Aussies qualified for the World Cup in 2010, 2014 and 2018, but failed to reach the knockout phase on each occasion. A similar outcome is on the cards this time around.
Tunisia World Cup Preview 2022
Odds to Win Group D: +1400
Back in January, Tunisa reached the Africa Cup of Nations quarterfinals – only to fall to Burkina Faso. Although the Eagles of Carthage beat Chile and Japan in June, they were thrashed 5-1 by Brazil last time out.
The Tunisians have never made it past the World Cup group stage, despite having featured in five editions of the tournament. Unfortunately, I can’t see them bucking that trend this year.
France may be the bookies’ favorite to win the group, but Denmark undoubtedly presents the greatest betting value. Since the Danes have already beaten France twice this year, I’m backing them to win Group D.
