Georgia finally got the monkey off its back outscoring SEC rival Alabama 27-9 in the second half to win the Bulldogs first national championship since 1980. Georgia beat Alabama 33-18 winning for the first time against the Crimson Tide since 2007.
With the title game fresh in the minds of college football fans everywhere, it’s time to begin looking at next year. With that, here is a look at the 2023 College Football Playoff national championship futures odds.
Top Contenders to Win the 2023 CFP National Championship
Will anything change in the 2022 college football season? Not really. There will be some turnover, but both Georgia and Alabama will compete once again for the SEC title and spots in the playoff. Georgia will start a new quarterback and will have some new faces on offense particularly after a few Bulldogs declare for the NFL draft.
The Bulldogs defense will simply reload and head coach Kirby Smart will most likely have the nation’s best unit once again in 2022. It will be much the same for Alabama next season. Heisman Trophy winner Bryce Young returns at quarterback. He will have a full stable of fresh faces at the skill positions and head coach Nick Saban’s defense will once again be full of future NFL draft picks.
It’s surprise then that the Georgia and Alabama are the favorites at +200 to win the 2023 CFP national championship.
Ohio State and Clemson
Any talk of a national champion should include two more familiar faces – Ohio State and Clemson. The Tigers had an “off” year going 10-3 this season. They won six straight including their bowl game but did not appear in the ACC title game. Clemson will return QB D.J. Uiagalelei and a strong cast of skill players to the offense and will likely have another strong defense in 2022.
Ohio State toyed with the CFP this season but lost to rival Michigan in the regular season finale. The Buckeyes won the Rose Bowl in dramatic fashion giving them some momentum as they head into next season. QB C.J. Stroud returns to lead the nation’s top offense. Ohio State is listed at +800 and Clemson at +1000 to win next year’s national title.
Everyone Else
In eight years of the CFP, four teams have dominated the competition. They are the top four on the betting board – Alabama, Clemson, Georgia, and Ohio State. Only a handful of other teams have even made it to the playoff.
Next season, the best bets to sneak in and steal away a national championship are Oregon, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, Florida, and Michigan. All five programs are listed at +4000 to win it all. Interestingly, Oregon, Oklahoma, and Florida all have new head coaches.
All five programs would be considered sleepers and all five will lose a number of important players. Michigan, for example, loses DE Aiden Hutchinson, a key member of the Wolverines defense. The Aggies, Sooners, Ducks and Gators will all be breaking in new quarterbacks next season. Whichever one excels might play a huge role in a massive upset.
