Several big storylines are in place heading into the 2023 Masters. Tiger Woods is set to tee off once again and put his injured leg to the test. Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy both come in as favorites at +700, plus peach ice cream sandwiches have returned to the venue’s menu list for fans! The traditional cool treat was missing last season due to supply issues.
Oh – and golfers from LIV Golf will once again be competing against the best. Laugh if you will, but there are some aspects of the listed storylines that should be considered. Any time that Tiger plays now he dominates talking points. Scheffler and McIlroy are the two highest-ranked golfers in the world and both are playing well. We also have no idea how stepping away from PGA TOUR golf will hit the golfers that jumped to LIV.
LIV players moved to a format with less pressure, less time on the course and fewer opportunities for playing against the best in the world. We have no idea how much of a toll this will take on their return to a full event at a major. But it may be big enough of a fade – at least for oddsmakers.
Cameron Smith and Dustin Johnson seem to be the two big-name LIV players that could make a push according to the odds list.
Here are the favorites to win the 2023 Masters PGA tournament:
Scottie Scheffler +700
Rory McIlroy +700
Jon Rahm +900
Jordan Spieth +1600
Patrick Cantlay +1800
No matter what you think about the divide in the game of golf, it does matter when making picks this week at the Masters. For me, I’m fading on most of the LIV players except for one heading into the opening round.
It’s not a matter of agreeing or disagreeing about why they joined the LIV Tour, it’s about not knowing how that Tour’s competition stands up against the PGA. No one knows at this point and probably won’t until there is more head-to-head competition and more stats to compare.
2023 Masters Preview
Where: Augusta, Georgia
Course: Augusta National Golf Club
Format: Stroke Play
Par: 72
Length: 7,545
When: April 6th-9th 2023
Purse: $15 Million
TV Coverage: CBS/ESPN/Masters.com
Augusta National course should be in great shape when the opening round of the 2023 Masters tee up this week. The biggest thing to make note of is that some additional distance has been added to the course – mostly on the 13th. TV viewers would probably not notice unless the announcers say something.
The biggest issue may be that the weather forecast calls for rain showers almost every day with cool temperatures. The course’s greens are maintained in a way to try to ensure a hard and fast putting surface. This is done with the help of an underground irrigation/ventilation system known as the SubAir System.

2023 US Masters Predictions
Scottie Scheffler +700
Scottie Scheffler could be the first player to win back-to-back Masters since Tiger Woods did so in 2001 and 2002. The only reason I’m not fading on Scheffler and that huge stat is that he’s playing great golf in 2023 and picking up where he was at this point in the season last year. So far this season, Schefler has reclaimed the OWGR’s top spot and is the No. 1 ranked player in the world. He’s already won twice this season, and he seems as calm as always. Plus, he’s at the top at greens hit and strokes gained.
Dustin Johnson +2800
Dustin Johnson won the Masters three years ago and did so by going 268/-20 overall with a 5- stroke victory over Sung Jai IM and Cameron Smith. It was the first win of 5-strokes or more since Woods won by 12-strokes in 2005. We have no idea how the lack of true “PGA TOUR” grind golf will play out with LIV Players. But Johnson has made a point of sarcastically saying that he’s not been affected by moving to the exhibition style of play that LIV golf promotes so this will be his stage to prove that.
Sam Burns +3300
Sam Burns has two wins this season if you include the Presidents Cup. Burns most recently carded the victory at WGC Dell Match Play. He was 6th at the Valspar prior and has 12th or better seven times this season with two missed weekends. Burns would love to erase a disappointing showing at the Masters last season when he missed the cut.
Others I Like: I’m going with Rory (+700) when looking at props and head-to-head match-ups. I think Rory can take the win for the Slam if he can put some pressure behind him. The only reason I’m not going 100% in with Jon Rahm (+900) is that he’s let me down a few times this season. I’ve faded on him recently and it’s proven to be a good play. But this is Augusta National and he has as much to prove as anyone. Shane Lowry (+5000) could be one of the best value picks this week.
