MLB Opening Day is on Thursday, March 30th 2023. All 30 MLB teams are playing. The action will begin at 1:05 PM ET with a pair of games and the last two games will start at 10:10 PM ET.
Here are my top five picks for MLB Opening Day 2023:
Atlanta Braves vs. Washington Nationals
Braves vs. Nationals Predictions
Best Bet: Atlanta Braves -1.5 (-140)
The Nationals are going to be bad this season. Jeimer Candelario is batting cleanup. Patrick Corbin will get the nod, but he’s coming off a season where he went 6-19 with a 6.31 ERA and 1.70 WHIP.
Atlanta will send Max Fried to the mound. He went 14-7 with a 2.48 ERA and 1.01 WHIP last season. He also pitched 11.1 innings during Sprint Training without allowing a run and striking out 14 batters.
Baltimore Orioles vs. Boston Red Sox
Orioles vs. Red Sox Predictions
Best Bet: Under 9 Runs (-110)
Boston will send Corey Kluber to the mound, while Kyle Gibson will start for the Orioles. Gibson has had a strong ST (1.29 ERA with 13 Ks and 0 BB in 14 innings). Kluber allowed three runs in 12.2 ST innings.
Neither team boasts a strong batting order and several guys on both teams have struggled to hit anything during ST. This will be a tight game and there won’t be many runs scored at Fenway.
Milwaukee Brewers vs. Chicago Cubs
Best Bet: Milwaukee Brewers ML (-140)
Corbin Burnes (12-8 with a 2.98 ERA and 0.97 WHIP last season) will start for the Brewers. The Cubs will send Marcus Stroman to the mound, but he’s going up a tough batting order that can hit home runs.
Willy Adames and Rowdy Tellez provide in the middle of the Brewers batting order. The Cubs are giving some veterans a chance to resurrect their careers, but I expect them to struggle this season.
Toronto Blue Jays vs. St. Louis Cardinals
Blue Jays vs. Cardinals Predictions
Best Bet: Over 7.5 Runs (-110)
These two teams have potent batting orders. Vladimir Guerrero will look to lead the charge for the Jays, while Paul Goldschimdt and Nolan Arenado will provide plenty of power for the Cardinals.
Alex Manoah had a 2.24 ERA last season and Miles Mikolas had a 3.29 ERA last season, but these two pitchers are going to have their hands full for this Opening Day assignment. This is also a low total.
Chicago White Sox vs. Houston Astros
White Sox vs. Astros Predictions
Best Bet: Chicago White Sox ML (+135)
The White Sox are healthy, so it’s a good time to bet on them before they’re injured. The Astros are going to likely win 100+ games again this season, but the White Sox are a live underdog for Opening Day.
Dylan Cease went 14-8 with a 2.20 ERA for the White Sox last season. Framber Valdez was excellent last season as well. This will likely be a low-scoring game and the White Sox could steal one.
