For the first time in NFL history, teams will play a 17-game schedule. No longer will mediocre teams be able to hang their hat on an 8-8 non-losing season.
Here, we’re not looking for mediocre. We’re looking for the best of the best. Which team will finish the 2021 NFL season with the best regular season record?
Here’s a look at the odds and picks.
The Chiefs Lead the Market
Any discussion of the best record in the NFL begins with the Kansas City Chiefs. The Chiefs had the best record in the league last year at 14-2. One of the negatives of having the league’s best record is being rewarded with a more difficult schedule the next season.
The Chiefs should rule the AFC West. They went 4-2 in the division last year. KC plays the AFC North which means games with Pittsburgh (12-4), Baltimore (11-5), and Cleveland (11-5). Buffalo (13-3), Green Bay (13-3), and Tennessee (11-5) are also on the schedule.
The Chiefs went 12-4, 12-4, and 10-6 in their three previous seasons. At +300, they’re the safe bet, but maybe not the best bet.
Defending Champs
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are a contender to finish with the NFL’s best record. The Bucs are given +500 odds and the Tom Brady-led team might be a better bet than KC.
Tampa Bay should take care of business in the NFC South now that Drew Brees is gone in New Orleans. The Bucs went 4-2 in the division last year and both losses were to the Saints.
The Bucs will cross over to play the AFC East. Buffalo will be the toughest test and Miami is coming off a solid season, but Tampa Bay gets both teams at home. The Jets and Patriots are almost guaranteed wins.
Tampa Bay also gets the NFC East, which has been the weakest division in football over the past few seasons. The Bucs return all 22 starters from their Super Bowl championship team, which makes them a stronger bet at +500 than the Chiefs.
Finding Value
There’s no question Carson Wentz was awful in Philadelphia last season, but remember when he was really good? If you do, you’ll remember that his offensive coordinator was a guy named Frank Reich, who is now Wentz’s head coach in Indianapolis.
Indy has the best offensive line in football and what should be one of the top three to five rushing offenses in 2021. Jonathan Taylor is primed to lead the NFL in rushing, which will take some of the pressure off of Wentz.
The Colts are strong defensively and they have a schedule that makes them a value pick at +2500. They play Houston and Jacksonville twice. Then, there are games against the Jets, Patriots, Cardinals, and Raiders.
Indy will have some tests right off the bat with Seattle and the Rams, but both games are at home. The Colts also have to face division foe Tennessee twice, which brings us to the other value pick.
The Titans have one of the best offenses in the league with the NFL’s leading rusher Derrick Henry, QB Ryan Tannehill, and WR A.J. Brown. Now, they add WR Julio Jones to the mix.
Tennessee’s schedule is similar to Indy’s with two games against the Texans and Jaguars. Then, there are the Jets and Patriots as well as the Cardinals. The problem for Tennessee is games at Seattle and at the Rams. Plus, they play Buffalo and Kansas City at home.
If you like Tennessee over the Colts, the Titans are listed at +4000. It’s a longshot, but the caliber of the Titans offense combined with a solid defense give them as good a chance as any to lead the NFL in wins.
