Each-Way Golf Betting Guide for Beginners

Are you a beginner and interested in trying your hand at betting on golf tournaments? You can always place a wager on who you think is going to win a golf tournament, as that’s one of the most common betting options available. There is a version of this type of wager that gives you two ways to score a win. It’s called “each-way” betting! This is something that you’ll find offered depending on the sportsbook platform you are using.

Each-way betting is becoming more common and is the equivalent of making two bets in one! You simply select a player that you think can win the tournament outright or finish 5th or better.

What Is Each-Way Golf Betting?

Each-way golf betting is easy to understand, as it is almost exactly what it says it is. On the surface, it means that you place a bet that allows you to select a golf tournament winner outright, while at the same time choosing the same player to finish fifth or better. However, there is a slight behind-the- scenes nuance that you need to be aware of as your wager is being split.

Think of it this way; you make a $20 each-way wager. Ten bucks are placed on the player winning outright, while the other $10 is placed on the player finishing in 5th or better. In general, I’m referencing tournaments of four rounds with 72 holes, not including playoffs. But it should translate easily to LIV Golf tournament formats. One thing to note is that not all sportsbooks offer this type of wagering option. But, you can always just put $10 for the win and $10 towards the 5th or better finish and make your version of an Each-way wager.

Picking Your Each-Way Betting Player

Every golf tournament is different as professional players on the PGA TOUR can pick and choose which events they enter. Also, every course is different and the weather can change from day to day during a four-round event. That’s where looking at trends comes into play! That starts with looking at golfers on a streak as well as some stats that I think are worth looking over.

There is a thought that “Big Names” rise to win “Big Tournaments”, but golf tournaments are often won by players down the list of the Official World Golf Rankings. This is why looking for players on a streak is important. It does not have to be a winning streak – but a run of good outings. Look at how a golfer that you are considering has finished in their last several outings.

You may see that the player that you are eyeing has only finished 5th or better once in their last ten events. That may not be a great pick for an outright winner based on that stat alone. However, each-way betting may make the same player look more valuable. The same player may have also finished 10th or better in all of those same events with no missed cuts and a win. Suddenly the same player looks better when including more information.

Additional Stats to Consider

A player’s average finish is a huge stat to consider as demonstrated by the above example. You should also dive into a player’s stats on greens in regulation, putting, birdies and scambling. There are always more stats to consider and you will, but these are several that will help you build a good picture of how a player is performing over some time. You can always look at driving distance and fairways hit, but greens in regulation shows that a golfer may still find the green and the hole despite a poor drive off the tee. One reason that I also like birdie and scrambling stats is that they show how a player is shaving strokes during their latest outings.

A Few Other Issues to Consider

Never miss the opportunity to do a quick internet search on any player that you are considering for any wager. Look for any news stories about injuries, poor play, changing irons, drivers, or putters. Changing caddies and even poor past performances at a certain venue. You may also see that the player may have recently gone through a loss of a family member. Professional golfers are human and sometimes personal things creep into their lives just like the rest of us.

Teeing Off with Each-Way Betting

Are you ready to put this information on each-way betting to work? Take a look at a few players, consider their most recent outings, their averages, and the stats that I’ve mentioned. Next, combine that with your knowledge of professional golf and place your first bet using this method of wagering. I hope this each-way golf betting guide for beginners has been helpful. Please keep in mind that payouts, the number of players offered, and the number of finishes – 4th, 5th, or other – are determined by the sportsbook platform you are enjoying. Be sure you do your research while taking in the above information and suggestions to improve your chances!
