Early 2020 SEC College Football Championship Futures

March marks the start of the spring ball season for college football. The seniors and top NFL prospects have moved on and the new recruiting class is still finishing up high school.

Bettors can get some solid takeaways from tracking their favorite teams’ spring practice, but at this stage of the offseason, there are far more questions than answers for every Division IA college football team.

The only betting odds that have been released for the 2020 season are futures to win a national title. The usual suspects are at the top of the list led by the ACC’s Clemson Tigers as +250 favorites. The Big Ten’s Ohio State Buckeyes are +450 second-favorites followed the Alabama Crimson Tide (+500) as perennial contenders to win it all.

Looking at the rest of the list, winning the SEC title could be a tall task for the Tide this season.

A rare two-loss season kept Alabama out of the four team playoff for a national title. With Nick Saban running the show, you know that Alabama will be highly motivated to get back on top in 2020. Unfortunately, that might not be enough given the renewed depth in this power conference.

SEC National Title Hopefuls

After Alabama at +500 odds to win the 2020 College Football Playoff Championship, the Georgia Bulldogs are next at +900.

The defending champions are the LSU Tigers and their odds to repeat are set at +1000. The next team on the board at +1200 odds is the Florida Gators. Rounding out the list of SEC teams in the Top 10 is the Auburn Tigers at +2500.

The two honorable mentions from the SEC are the Texas A&M Aggies at +2500 and the Tennessee Volunteers at +4000.

The SEC is King

That is quite a list in comparison to the other four major conferences.

Looking at the top 15 teams on the futures board, Clemson is the only team from the ACC. Penn State (+2800) and Michigan (+3300) join the Buckeyes from the Big Ten.

The Oklahoma Sooners are still the class of the Big 12 at +2200 odds. Texas also made the list at longer +2800 odds. The only team from the Pac-12 to land in the Top 15 is the Oregon Ducks at +2500. Notre Dame playing as an Independent has +2500 odds to win the 2020 championship.

The bottom line for this examination of the top contenders is that if you can find posted odds for the SEC vs. the Field, bet the SEC.

The division battles alone in this conference are going to be brutal.

Alabama, LSU and Auburn headline the West Division race. Georgia, Florida and Tennessee will square off against one another in the East title race.

Head-to-Head Play Will Keep it Interesting

The only downside to this ultra-high level of competition is that teams will start to cancel one another out in head-to-head play. The conference champion will earn a spot in the four-team playoff but there are going to more than a few two-loss teams in this group.

Some early takeaways would be to give Alabama the benefit of the doubt as the best SEC team on the list. The track record speaks for itself.

Another is that LSU is going to have some mighty big shoes to fill with Joe Burrow playing football on Sunday’s next season. If you want to squeeze the best value out of the longer odds for the other SEC teams, Georgia would top my list at +900.
