Learn to Bet Series: Sweetheart Teaser Strategy

A sweetheart teaser is also known as a monster teaser at some sportsbooks. It is a unique bet that, like a regular teaser, combines a number of wagers into one.

To understand the sweetheart teaser, it helps to remember what a regular teaser bet is. Remember, the standard teaser will include anywhere from two to fifteen or more teams in a combination of bets where all of them must win in order for the teaser to cash.

Regular teasers allow you to add extra points to the spread. Normally, the point spread can be altered between four and ten points, depending on the sport and the teaser.

The sweetheart teaser is generally offered at -110 to -130 pricing and will vary depending upon the sportsbook. Common sweetheart teasers in the NFL are three-team, 10-point teasers. You can adjust the spread 10 points on three teams you like. In order to win the sweetheart teaser, all three bets must cash.

Choosing a Sportsbook

The first thing you look for in a sweetheart teaser bet is a sportsbook. At most sportsbooks, ties are a loss. There are some sportsbooks though that reduce on a tie. If one or more of the bets results in a push, the bet is refunded.

It’s also important to note that sportsbooks offer terrible odds on sweetheart teasers. You will see many books offer -120 odds and ties lose.

The other consideration in finding the right sportsbook is betting limits. There are sites that will allow as much as $20,000 per wager, but most are in the $500 maximum range.

Find a sportsbook that offers -110 odds. Preferably, you would like one that refunds your bet if one of the legs of the teaser is a push.

Successful Sweetheart Teasers

Having success in sweetheart teasers comes down to understanding a few key concepts. One is how often you must win. At odds of -110, you have to win 52.38 percent of your bets to break even. With a three-team teaser bet, each leg must win 80.61 percent of the time.

Now, you may be thinking “how is that possible?” It helps then to understand the most common margins of victory in NFL games. The most common margin of victory is three points, which is followed by seven.

In order, the most common margins of victory in an NFL game are as follows: 3, 7, 10, 6, 14, 4, 1, 17, 13, and 2.

What you can do then is group favorites and underdogs into sets. For example, favorites of -10.5 to – 12.5 or underdogs at +7.5 to +9.5.

If you can design a three-team sweetheart teaser to fit into a certain category, you may have a higher chance of success. You will definitely have a greater chance of success than just blindly choosing three teams.

Check out the set of underdogs from +4.5 to +5.5 that have been teased 10 points. Since 2006, this set is 96-24 for a win percentage of 80 percent.

Can sweetheart teaser bets be successful? Yes, they can. Bettors just need to be sure they understand the rules of bet, choose the right sportsbook, and do the research to give the bet a better chance of success.
