Super Bowl LV will soon be upon us and with it will come several billions of dollars in wagers. There will be a number of different ways to bet on the game. Bettors can follow a few strategies to ensure they make some money on the game.
Here is a guide to help beginning bettors have success in wagering on the Super Bowl.
Looking Back at NFL Super Bowl History Helps
After 54 Super Bowls, the AFC has won 27 and the NFC has 27 wins. Favorites are 36-17 straight up and 29-20-2 against the spread. In the last four Super Bowls, the favorite has won and covered in three.
If you go back a few years and take into account the last 13 Super Bowls, you will find that the underdog has had some success. Underdogs have won nine of the last 13 games.
Remember, you can bet on the point spread and you can also simply wager on which team will win. If you bet on your team to cover the point spread, your team will need to win by more points than the spread. If Green Bay is a 3-point favorite and you bet on the Packers, they will need to win by four or more points.
You can also bet on the moneyline where you are just picking the winner. If you stick with Green Bay to win and the odds are -120, you will win $100 if you wager $120.
Betting Totals
You can also bet on the total of the combined final score. You wager on whether or not you think the total will go Over or Under the oddsmakers total. The last two Super Bowls have seen the total go Under. Last year, oddsmakers set the total at 53. Kansas City beat San Francisco 31-20 for a total of 51.
Prior to the last two Super Bowls, the total went Over in five of six. In the last 13 Super Bowls, the final score has added up to fewer than 50 points just three times.
This year, the four remaining teams in the race for the Lombardi Trophy are all among the top six scoring teams in the NFL. Keep that in mind if you are betting the total.
NFL Super Bowl Proposition Bets
Where you can really have some fun and win more money is on any of a number of proposition bets. These bets, also called prop bets, have nothing to do with the outcome of the game. You will be able to bet on everything from the Super Bowl MVP to what song the halftime performer will sing first.
There will be a number of simple Yes-No or Either-Or type prop bets, such as the pregame coin toss. There will be the typical NFL prop bets like which team will score first. You will find player props as well and you’ll be able to wager on passing yards by a quarterback or how many receiving yards a player will have.

Making Money
One way to increase your chances of making some money on betting the Super Bowl is to spread your risk. You can also place in-game bets that can offset an impending loss on a point spread or moneyline bet. Maybe the game gets out of hand and you know you are going to lose on the spread.
You can place live bets on the result of the next play or even bet on the game’s MVP. You can wager on half or quarter results too. Your team is getting beat badly in the first half, but you bet on them to win the third or fourth quarter.
These bets, at the right price, can help to offset a loss and help you end up in the black instead of the red.
