NASCAR Preview: 2020 Bank of America Roval 400 Picks

The final race of this round of the NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs takes place this weekend at Charlotte Motor Speedway. But it won’t be on the tri-oval known for high-speeds and exciting races. The Bank of America Roval 400 takes place on the road course for only the third time in NASCAR history and Chase Elliott is the favorite.

Elliott won the race last year in commanding fashion. He drove his car head-on into a soft barrier during the race last season only to come back to take the checkered flag. Ryan Blaney has the honor of winning the first Cup Series race on the Charlotte Roval when he took the win in 2018.

Elliott and Blaney are both considered betting favorites, but there is a wide gap between them according to oddsmakers. Elliott comes in at +250 – the only driver below +650 – with Blaney at +1000. The top five favorites to win the Bank of America Roval 400, according to Intertops, include drivers who have all won on a road course.

2020 Bank of America Roval Predictions

Chase Elliott +250

I went with Elliott at this race for the last two years in NASCAR betting and he’s done well. He won the race last season and placed 6th the year before. In his 2019 win, Elliott led 35 laps and had near-perfect pit stops. His big issue came when he over-steered heading into the first turn which resulted in him hitting a soft barrier. He still came back to win. He also won the race on the Daytona Road Course this season.

Kevin Harvick +650

Last year on the Roval it was Harvick who gave Elliott the most trouble. Harvick finished the race in third place after leading for 34 laps. In 2018, he finished inside the top-ten in the 9 th spot. Harvick has been one of the most consistent drivers this season. He’s only finished outside of the top-ten five times this year.

Alex Bowman +1800

Alex Bowman may be the value pick of the weekend. Bowman finished this race in second place in this race last season and placed fourth the year prior. Earlier this year on the Road Course at Daytona the driver of the No. 88 Chevrolet finished a disappointing twelfth but that came after running strong all day including laps as the second-place car.

Others I like

Ryan Blaney and Kyle Busch: Ryan Blaney won this race the first time the Cup Series turned laps on it and finished 8th last year on the Charlotte Roval. I would put him as one of my top-three but he’s been a bit inconsistent the last several weeks. The same goes for Kyle Busch – inconsistent. However, he is Kyle Busch. Last week at Talladega he showed he was still fighting for a win following several wrecks. He may carry that fighting attitude over one more week. He needs a great run to get above the cutline with hopes other bubble drivers have a horrible day.

One Fantasy Driver

Here’s the guy I round out my fantasy team with this week – Alex Bowman! Alex Bowman has been named the new driver of the No. 48 Chevy starting next season when Jimmie Johnson retires. As for fantasy, he finished this race in second place last season. He’s a perfect driver to have in your line-up or the garage in case you need to make a driver swap.
