NASCAR Preview: 2020 South Point 400 Picks

It is time for Round Two of the NASCAR Cup Series Championship Playoffs with the running of the South Point 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. As expected, Kevin Harvick comes in as the favorite heading into the race weekend at +333.

Harvick won last weekend at Bristol where he held off Kyle Busch down the stretch. Busch led 159 laps to Harvick’s 226. After the race, Busch commented that he might not make it to the next round of the Playoffs. That may have pushed him down the favorites list this week.

Busch comes in at +1000 behind seven other drivers. As for the favorites – the log jam is at +600 with three drivers. Here’s how that breaks down according to Intertops.

Kevin Harvick +333

Martin Truex Jr +550

Brad Keselowski +600

Joey Logano +600

Denny Hamlin +600

2020 South Point 400 NASCAR Predictions

Kevin Harvick +333

I feel like Kevin Harvick will have a bad run sometime… Vegas may not be the place to count him out. He has been dominant all year and he has two wins at the track. His key stat for Vegas is that, among Championship Playoff drivers, he’s led the most laps with 679 as the leader.

Joey Logano +600

Joey Logano is the defending track winner at Las Vegas. That gives him two checkered flags in the last three races at the track. He trails Harvick, again – among Playoff drivers, when it comes to being out front with 487 laps as the leader. Out of 14 Cup Series starts at Vegas Logano has finished ten times inside the top-ten with six top-five runs.

Kyle Busch +1000

I’ve faded Kyle Busch for weeks and have been correct. But, at +1000 he looks more attractive. Granted, this has not been a stellar season for the defending Cup Series Champion but you can’t push his numbers aside. He has one win at the track in the Cup Series and five additional wins at the track in the Xfinity and Gander Outdoors Truck Series. He has nine runs inside the top-ten as a Cup driver.

Others I like

Brad Keselowski and Ryan Blaney: Brad Keselowski has three wins at Las Vegas and has finished 1 st , 2 nd , or 3 rd in the last four races at the track. Ryan Blaney was eliminated from the Playoffs last week but he has run well at Las Vegas. He has eight Cup Series starts there and he’s finished top-ten five times with one pole.

One Fantasy Driver

Here’s the guy I round out my fantasy team with this week – Brad Keselowski! If you can get Keselowski – add him to your team! He has an average finish of 3.6 with an average start of 8.5 over the last ten races at Las Vegas. That’s a big swing.
