If there is one thing that is constant, it is change. Whatever industry it may be, if you’re not changing and adapting to the market conditions you’ll likely be forced out.
And with that, we have the 2021 version of the WestGate SuperContest. From its beginnings in 1986, the SuperContest was a monopoly in the major football handicapping contests market. It grew year after year until a new player – the Circa Million contest – entered in 2019.
With the success of the Circa Million, the SuperContest, at $1,500 a pop, was beginning to lose entries. The top dog at WestGate Superbook, Jay Kornegay, had to make some changes and, just like that, we have the new, improved 2021 WestGate SuperContest.
Rules Changes
To sum it up, there aren’t any rules changes. The contest remains the same as in previous years. When Circa Million jumped into the game, that contest just copied the SuperContest’s rules. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
Those that enter will make five picks against the spread (ATS) each week using Westgate’s in-house lines. A winning ATS pick receives one point. A push is worth 0.5 points and an ATS loss doesn’t score at all.
Players compete the entire season to amass as many points as possible. Those that finish in the top 100 will qualify for cash winnings. The minimum payout is usually $2,500 and increases up until the grand prize winner gets the biggest share of the pot.
2021 WestGate SuperContest Prize Pool
In previous years, Westgate took $120 from every entry to cover costs. Because of the competition with Circa Million, that $120 will remain in the pot. On top of that, the entry fee will drop from $1,500 down to $1,000. That puts the SuperContest in line with Circa Million.
Entries should rise as a result of the price drop. If they reach 3,000 or so like they did prior to Circa Million, it’s likely that another $360,000 will be added to the prize pool in 2021.
Contests Within the SuperContest
Another recent change to the SuperContest gave an opportunity to players that didn’t perform so well at different points of the season. In addition to the regular season standings, the season is also broken into quarters.
Players might struggle and have a poor overall record but they go 24-1 during the third quarter. That performance now wins them some cash. This year due to the success of Circa Million’s in-season bonus contests, the SuperContest will offer players even more choices.
There will be six three-week contests and three six-week contests. Players can win money by doing well in Weeks 1-3, 4-6, 7-9, 10-12, 13-15, and 16-18. Or, players can win by performing well in Weeks 1-6, 7- 12, and 13-18.
