The Hart Memorial Trophy – commonly known as the Hart Trophy – is given annually to the most valuable player in the National Hockey League. Essentially, the end-of-season prize is the NHL’s “MVP” award.

First awarded at the conclusion of the 1923-24 NHL season, the original trophy was donated to the league by Dr. David Hart, who was the father of Cecil Hart – a former coach and general manager of the Montreal Canadiens.

At the end of each regular season, members of the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association (PHWA) rank their top five candidates using a 10, 7, 5, 3, 1 scoring system. After the three finalists are revealed, the award is presented following the playoffs.
