PGA Preview 2020 WGC FedEx St Jude Invitational

The World Golf Championship (WGC) FedEx St Jude Invitational is next up on the PGA schedule and Jon Rahm comes in as the favorite at +900. Rahm was devastating two weeks ago when he won the Memorial by going 9-under over Ryan Palmer and Matthew Fitzpatrick.

That win earned Rahm the top spot on the Official World Golf Rankings – he skipped the 3M Open last week.

Tony Finau (+3300) was one of my bright spots at the 3M event coming in at T3 which is still somewhat disappointing following some missed opportunities on Sunday. You can check out my thoughts on Finau in that article.

Back to St Jude, Rahm will have to get past current FedEx points leader Justin Thomas as well as a loaded field that includes last years defending St Jude Champ Brooks Koepka. Thomas won the year prior and comes in at +1200 with Koepka down the favorites list at +3000.

Here are the top-five favorites to win the FedEx St Jude Invitational.

Jon Rahm +900

Rory McIlroy +1100

Bryson DeChambeau +1200

Justin Thomas +1200

Patrick Cantlay +1800

This is a no-cut event with a limited field.

TPC Southwinds is located in Memphis, Tennessee, and can be considered a traditional-style course. The terrain is gently rolling, fairways are a combination of open with some tree-lined, greens are medium size. The layout may seem easy to approach but the course is known for tricky bunker and water hazards.

Look for long drives from the big hitters and plenty of birdie opportunities.

John Rahm and Rory McIlroy hold the 18-hole course record of 62 with Brooks Koepka holding the 72-hole record when he finished 264 at the course last season.

Rory McIlroy +1100

Rory McIlroy has four top-five finishes in his last four WGC events. He has played well at Memphis in the past. Rory can be there on Sunday for the win if he avoids the “off” round during the tournament that has bothered him recently. He needs his second shots to be sharp this week.

Webb Simpson +2000

Webb Simpson comes in as No. 2 on the FedEx ranking and holding the No. 4 spot on the OWGR. Simpson has three wins on the season including the Presidents Cup. He also has eight top-ten finishes this season. Simpson can bounce back from missing the cut at the Memorial

Viktor Hovland +2500

Viktor Hovland comes in at +2500 following a strong showing at the Workday Charity Open. Hovland should be very comfortable with the ability to open up his driver at TPC Southwind.

Others I Like

Tommy Fleetwood comes in at +3000 this week and could be one of the players to rise to the top this weekend. Fleetwood has had a very limited schedule this season but Memphis is a perfect place for his driver and Putter to shine. Tony Finau is driving me crazy this year… but he’s still worth looking at. Finau has had some problems closing things out on Sunday. Hopefully, he gets tough mentally this week and avoids final day mistakes.
