The big news, of course, related to the 2022 men’s Australian Open is the deportation of No. 1 seed and nine-time champion Novak Djokovic. The world’s No. 1-ranked player is not vaccinated against COVID-19 and Australian officials revoked his visa as a result.
With Djokovic out of the field, the road to the 2022 title is open to the likes of Daniil Medvedev, Alexander Zverez, and Rafael Nadal. There could also a potential sleeper or two that could rise out of the pack.
Here’s a look at the top contenders to win the 2022 men’s Australian Open.
The New Favorite
Last year, Medvedev won his side of the bracket and faced Djokovic in the 2021 Aussie Open final. The Russian put up a fight in the first set but eventually lost 7-5, 6-2, 6-2. With Djokovic out of the race, Medvedev stands to benefit the most. That’s why he is the new favorite at +150 to win it all.
The 6-foot-6-inch Russian is 3-1 in single matches so far in 2022 playing for Russia in the ATP Cup. He will face Henri Laaksonen in his first match. He is the world’s No. 2-ranked player and won the last Grand Slam tournament of the 2021 season – the U.S. Open.
The Contenders
Challenging Medvedev will be Alexander Zverev and Rafael Nadal. The German Zverez has never won a Grand Slam title, but he made the finals of the 2020 U.S. Open and the semifinals of last year’s French Open. Zverev is listed next on the board after Medvedev at +300.
Nadal, currently ranked No. 5 in the world, is tied with Djokovic and Roger Federer for the most Grand Slam singles titles in history. The Big Three each have 20. Nadal’s best surface is clay, but he won in Australia in 2009 and has lost in the final to Djokovic four times. With Djokovic out, Nadal could be a strong bet at +550.
The Sleepers
Stefanos Tsitsipas will face some challenges in his bracket which is why he is listed at +2200 to win in Australia. Tsitsipas lost to Djokovic in last year’s Australian Open final. He also lost in the final in 2019. The 6-4 Greek has yet to win a Grand Slam title. His best finish was in losing last year’s French Open to Nadal. Tsitsipas’ aggressive style makes him a strong candidate on any surface. He’s the fourth-ranked player in the world right now and could find himself in the final once again.
A real longshot would be Andrey Rublev who is listed at +5000 to win. Like some of the other young players in this year’s tournament, Rublev has yet to win a Grand Slam singles title. He made the quarterfinals last year in Melbourne and is the No. 6 player in the world right now.
