The 2021 college football season is set to begin on Saturday, August 28 and there are five games on the schedule that day. The United States sports betting industry is set to take off again beginning on Saturday as college football is always a popular betting market.
Instead of focusing on the college football spreads this weekend, taking a look at the over/under is a better option. Most of these games have very large spreads, but betting on the total number of points should be more predictable.

Nebraska vs. Illinois Predictions
Best Bet: Over 55 Points
The first game of the day will feature the Illinois Fighting Illini hosting the Nebraska Cornhuskers at Memorial Stadium. Nebraska is a 7.5 point favorite in this matchup, but this should be a game that is pretty competitive.
55 total points seem extremely low for this game as both Nebraska and Illinois really struggle on the defensive side of the ball. These two teams aren’t exactly great on offense either, but there will be some points scored in this game.
Illinois gives up a ton of points, and Nebraska has a terrific playmaker in quarterback Adrian Martinez. Nebraska is going to score points in a hurry, and that is going to drive up the point total.
The Fighting Illini don’t possess the same big-play ability, but they are going to score some points against Nebraska. These two teams are both scoring at least 30 points and taking the over is the right play.
Connecticut vs. Fresno State Predictions
Best Bet: Under 63 Points
Fresno State hosts UConn on Saturday afternoon, and this is a game that has a massive spread. UConn does not have a solid football program, and the Fresno State Bulldogs should have little trouble winning this game.
The Bulldogs are going to be the team that does nearly all of the scoring in this game as UConn just doesn’t have enough talent to find the end zone. Fresno State is going to be able to put up a ton of points, but they aren’t getting close to 50.
This game won’t be close, and it also won’t feature enough scoring to get close to 63 total points.
Best Bet: Over 69 Points
If you are a fan of high-scoring football games then the matchup between the UCLA Bruins and the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors is the game to watch. UCLA is a 17.5-point favorite, but this is a game that could be much closer than the betting line suggests.
Hawaii has traditionally been a team that throws the ball a ton, and that is going to be the case yet again in this game. The Rainbow Warriors are going to take some shots down the field, and they will hit on some of those attempts.
UCLA should be a much stronger team this season, and this will be a solid opening performance from them. That offense will be facing a sub-par defense and the Bruins are going to put up some points.
69 points is a lot, but these two teams go over that total with an impressive offensive display.
