Two Fantasy Football Draft Strategies to Utilize This Season

With the NFL draft over and done with leaving the fantasy community left all hot and bothered for the new hotness entering the NFL, today we’ll be going over the two best startup draft strategies I strongly recommend at this point in the offseason.

As I mentioned in the opening paragraph, everyone who plays fantasy football is in love with rookies. Including myself, it is extremely tantalizing to chase the new stud muffin of fantasy football. However, it’s important to stay grounded in reality and realize that building a team based off all rookies from this year’s draft class is not the most wise decision.

In fact, it would be a pretty poor one due to the bust rate of incoming rookies for fantasy football purposes. With that very important disclaimer out of the way, let’s dive into my two favorite draft strategies for this point in the offseason.

Fantasy Football Win Now Strategy

First, we have a contender approach that focuses on the best player available from a win now perspective, while sprinkling in rookie talent in the middle rounds of the startup. With this strategy you’ll be avoiding the high draft capital rookies like Justin Fields, Ja’Marr Chase, etc, and focusing on more proven assets that are even second year players. For example, D’Andre Swift fell right into my lap at 3.06 in my latest startup draft employing this strategy. Focus on the proven guys to build a 2-3 window of a powerhouse. Players such as Ryan Tannehill, Russell Wilson, Julio Jones, Adam Thielin, Chris Carson, and many others are all great targets.

From this point on when you have a starting roster filled with proven fantasy studs, swing for the fences in the later rounds on rookies like Amon-Ra St. Brown. High ceiling rookies who will likely sit on your bench for the year with your proven starters is a recipe for success.

Fantasy Football Rebuilding Strategy

My other go to strategy right now is a productive struggle startup, or a full rebuild startup. If you’re in a money league I wouldn’t recommend this strategy as much due to the need for a couple years to get huge results, but trust me. This strategy can turn into a massive payoff that leads into a dynasty that crushes your leagues. What you want to do is trade out of as many picks as you possibly can and gather as many future rookie first round draft picks as you possibly can.

This strategy is extremely effective because people value rookie picks the least during a startup draft and I’ve seen league mates gather as many as nine first round draft picks for the next season. Insane right? Exactly. Once you gather extreme first round draft capital for the next three years, draft the most high upside players available on the board in the late rounds to try and lay a solid foundation for your amazing rookie talent to come in the next few years.

This strategy also basically guarantees the top rookie pick in next year’s draft, and gives you countless amounts of draft picks. A super fun strategy that gets proven results, it’s definitely worth a try. I hope you found these strategies helpful in your drafts this offseason, happy drafting!
