Cards’ Andre Pallante Shoots for Continued Success vs. Reds
St. Louis Cardinals director Oliver Marmol decided to adjust his pitching schedule after Tuesday’s rainout. It wasn’t a surprise that he chose Andre Pallante to face the Cincinnati Reds on Friday.

Reds’ Offense and Pallante’s Role
Reds ’ Offensive Output
The Reds came out swinging in the series opener on Thursday, collecting 16 hits and winning 11- 4. “ They had some really good at- bats, ” Marmol said. “ So throw this one out. ”
Pallante’s Role in the Rotation
Originally, Marmol planned to use the bullpen for Friday’s game to give the rotation an extra day of rest. However, the rainout led to a doubleheader against the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday, so Marmol decided to start Matthew Liberatore in Game 2 and pushed Pallante’s start to Friday.
Pallante, who transitioned from a relief role to starting due to Steven Matz’s injury, has a 3- 2 record with a4.76 ERA in five starts this season. In his latest start, he allowed five runs on seven hits and three walks in51/3 innings, earning a 6- 5 victory over the San Francisco Giants on June 20.
Since Matz is expected to be out for at least a month, Pallante and Liberatore are competing for the fifth starter role. Liberatore made a strong case by throwing six shutout innings against the Braves.
Reds’ Pitching and Lineup Changes
Starting Pitcher Frankie Montas
Frankie Montas, who pitched a 3-5, 4.48 ERA loss to Pallante and the Cardinals on May 29, will be the Reds’ countermeasure. In that game, Montas permitted three sudden spikes in demand for six hits, including a homer by Matt Woodworker, north of six innings. He walked two while striking out five. In his two career starts against the Cardinals, Montas has a 0-1 record and a 9.0 ERA.
In his latest start, Montas pitched well against the Boston Red Sox, allowing two runs on five hits over six innings, striking out four and walking one. Despite his solid performance, the Reds lost 4- 3. “ He threw tons of strikes with all of his pitches, ” Reds manager David Bell said. However, with his stuff, he is got a lot of success ahead, “ If he continues to do that. ”
Lineup Adjustments
Jeimer Candelario and Noelvi Marte
Reds infielder Jeimer Candelario missed his second successive game on Thursday due to hamstring tendinitis, which also caused knee soreness. This made the return of third baseman Noelvi Marte, who had been serving an 80- game suspension for performance- enhancing drugs, even more critical. In his season debut, Marte went 3- for- 5 with a stolen base, three runs, and an RBI.
“ The gift Noelvi is, the player we have seen already, that is why it’s so important for Noelvi to be himself, go out and play hard and work to get better every day, ” Bell said. “ Everything additional is going to take care of itself. The production and the performance will be there. ”
Tyler Stephenson
Additionally, Reds catcher Tyler Stephenson was a late scratch from Thursday’s game as his wife went into labor. He’s now on paternity leave.
As the Cardinals and Reds continue their series, both teams will be looking to their key players and making necessary adjustments to secure a win.
