Reds’ Rece Hinds Looks to Stay Hot vs. Weary Marlins
The Cincinnati Reds plan to keep riding the flood of youngster Rece Hinds’ wonderful exhibition when they have the Miami Marlins on Saturday evening in the second challenge of their three-game series.
Rece Hinds’ Notable Start
Rece Hinds, 23, has had a prompt effect since his advancement from Triple-A Louisville on Monday. In Friday’s series opener, Hinds hit a huge homerun and scored two runs, driving the Reds to a 7-4 triumph. This exhibition stretched out his hitting streak to five games, making him the primary player in MLB history with an additional five fair hits in his initial two games. With three homers and seven extra-fair hits in only five games, Hinds has matched the record for the most by a youngster in such a limited capacity to focus.
“It’s unheard of, really,” Reds manager David Bell said. “But Rece isn’t surprised. People throughout our organization aren’t really surprised. Obviously, he’s swinging the bat great and really in a groove. But he has the ability to do it. He has the talent to do it and to step right in at this level and do what he’s capable of says a lot about Rece and his preparation, what he’s gone through to get himself here.”
Bell praised the Triple-A staff for their role in Hinds’ preparation, highlighting their efforts in getting him ready for this opportunity.
Hinds expressed his excitement and gratitude for his early success. “I mean, it’s awesome,” Hinds said. “I’m very grateful to be able to come up here and succeed as quickly as I did. But I’m just trying to stay humble, stay even keeled, live in the present and have fun with it.”
Marlins’ Struggles
The Marlins have lost four in a row and nine of their last 11 games. They are hoping a good night’s sleep will help them recover after arriving in Cincinnati at 4 a.m. ET on Friday following a late game in Houston. The Marlins fell behind 7-0 early on Friday and a late rally was insufficient to overcome the deficit.
Marlins manager Skip Schumaker kept Friday’s batting practice but is considering canceling Saturday’s session to give his players more rest.
“You get some of these trips, unfortunately,” Schumaker said. “Getting in at 4 o’clock isn’t ideal, but that’s part of being a big leaguer and adjusting. I think most of the guys got (enough) sleep.”
Pitching Matchup: Andrew Abbott vs. Edward Cabrera
The Reds will send lefty Andrew Abbott (9-6, 3.06 ERA) to the mound for his 19th start of the season. Abbott has been in excellent form, winning his last four starts. In his two July starts, Abbott has allowed just one run on six hits over 13 1/3 innings, including seven innings of three-hit shutout ball against Colorado last Monday. Saturday will mark Abbott’s first career start against Miami.
The Marlins will counter with right-hander Edward Cabrera (1-2, 6.84 ERA), making his seventh start of the season. Cabrera has struggled with control, recording 15 walks and 35 strikeouts in 25 innings across six starts this season. The four-year veteran has never faced the Reds.

Outlook for the Game
With Hinds giving a critical lift to the Reds’ setup, Cincinnati hopes to expand their winning streak and proceed with their momentum. The Marlins, then again, are looking to break out of their downturn and track down consistency.
Abbott’s new strength on the hill gives the Reds certainty, while Cabrera should track down his cadence to allow the Marlins a battling opportunity. As the two groups conform to the challenges of the time, the exhibition of these youthful players and pitchers will be basic in deciding the result of Saturday’s game.
