Royals Look to Ride Strong Offense into Rematch vs. Tigers
The Kansas City Royals are on fire this May, and they’re looking to keep the flames burning in their rematch against the Detroit Tigers. Riding a wave of four straight wins and nine victories in their last twelve games, the Royals’ offense has been unstoppable, outscoring opponents 27-12 in the past four games. As they gear up for the second game of their three-game series on Tuesday night in Kansas City, they’re ready to build on their winning momentum.
Royals’ Offensive Prowess
The Royals’ bats have been sizzling, consistently putting up big numbers. They’ve scored at least five runs in eight of their wins this month. In their latest 8-3 victory over the Tigers, Kansas City lit up the scoreboard with a six-run sixth inning, marking back-to-back games where they scored eight runs.
Reliever Joey Wentz couldn’t find an out during this crucial inning, giving up five runs. “Our guys put good at-bats together, and they did it one right after the other,” said Royals manager Mike Quatraro. “It was really impressive.”
Injuries and Adjustments
The Tigers faced a setback when starter Reese Olson exited in the third inning after a comebacker from Michael Massey struck him on the right hip. Despite the contusion, Olson remained optimistic about his recovery, stating, “I feel fine. I’m sure it’ll be a little bruised up, but should be good to go.”
Standout Performances
Michael Massey: Massey had a stellar game, going 3-for-4 and scoring twice, including a solo home run in the second inning to open the scoring. He’s been on fire lately, with three multi-hit games in his last four outings.
Salvador Perez: The 34-year-old catcher is heading into Tuesday’s game on a six-game hitting streak, during which he has gone 10-for-21 with a home run, five RBIs, and three runs. Perez praised Massey’s hard work and performance, saying, “It’s pretty good the way he’s hitting right now. Good for him. Good for us, too.”
Tigers’ Struggles
On the flip side, the Tigers have hit a rough patch, losing four of their last six games and eleven of their past sixteen. Despite some close games, including seven decided by a run or two, they haven’t been able to change their fortunes. Joey Wentz acknowledged his struggles, saying, “Probably the outcome is different if I go in and do my job, which I didn’t. I don’t think you let it deter you. I think you come back tomorrow, try to get better and move on.”
Bright Spots for Detroit
Colt Keith: The 22-year-old had a solid performance, going 3-for-4 with a double in the seventh inning that drove in Kerry Carpenter for the Tigers’ second run. Keith is 8-for-14 over his last four games, with three RBIs and three runs. “I’m starting to hit balls hard in the air,” he said. “As soon as I get to that point, I’m able to start to let it loose on fastballs, get on time every time and do some damage.”
Upcoming Pitching Matchup
Looking ahead to Tuesday’s game, the Tigers will rely on right-hander Casey Mize, who has a 1-2 record with a 3.50 ERA this season. Mize has had mixed results against the Royals, with a 2-1 record and a 4.57 ERA in eight career starts. On the other side, the Royals will counter with Alec Marsh, who boasts a 3-1 record and a 2.43 ERA. Marsh will face the Tigers and his former Arizona State teammate Spencer Torkelson for the first time in his career.
The Kansas City Royals are determined to keep their streak alive and their bats hot as they face the Detroit Tigers again. With key players stepping up and a solid game plan, the Royals are in a great position to extend their winning run.
