Celtics Aim to Slow Streaking Trail Blazers
The Boston Celtics will look to continue their strong play and get another boost from their bench when they host the red-hot Portland Trail Blazers on Wednesday night.
Celtics Counting on Depth
Boston has been without Kristaps Porzingis (illness) and Jrue Holiday (hand) for the past two games, but their depth stepped up in a 110-103 win over the Denver Nuggets on Sunday. The Celtics’ bench outscored Denver’s 28-11, a stark improvement from being outscored 33-6 in a loss to Cleveland two days earlier.
Payton Pritchard, Sam Hauser, and Neemias Queta led the second-unit effort against Denver. Pritchard had 11 points, Hauser added eight, and Queta contributed eight points and 10 rebounds.
“For us to be a great team, they have to play that way and it’s a great thing,” Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla said. “Payton took ownership. He wants to make sure when he’s in the game, that lineup impacts winning.”
Queta has embraced his role, averaging 5.0 points and 3.7 rebounds in limited minutes this season.
“Just very professional,” Al Horford said of Queta. “He stays ready for his opportunities, protects the paint, gets rebounds. He’s been great for us.”
Horford also had a strong performance against Denver, contributing 19 points, eight rebounds, and three steals while stepping in for Porzingis.
Trail Blazers Finding Their Stride
Portland is on a roll, winning four of the first five games on its seven-game road trip. The Blazers’ only loss in that stretch came in overtime against the Cleveland Cavaliers, the team with the NBA’s best record. Portland continued its strong play Monday with a 119-102 win over the Philadelphia 76ers.
The Trail Blazers have a balanced attack, with seven players averaging double-digit scoring.
“It’s always somebody different every night for us, which I think makes us difficult to prepare for,” Portland coach Chauncey Billups said.
Anfernee Simons leads Portland with 19.0 points per game and poured in 34 against Philadelphia. However, Billups highlighted Shaedon Sharpe’s all-around impact in that game.
“I think offense is easy for Shaedon,” Billups said. “When he’s locked in on defense, it makes his offense even easier.”
Sharpe had a breakout performance with 20 points, a career-high 11 rebounds, and five assists.
“Career-high in rebounding. We need those rebounds in a major way. I think he’s maybe the most athletic guy in basketball. I need him going to get those tough rebounds,” Billups added.
