Hawks Looking to Get Defensive Against Nets

The Atlanta Hawks are heading into the final stretch of the season with offensive momentum—but serious defensive questions. As they prepare to visit the Brooklyn Nets on Thursday night, they’re hoping to tighten up before the NBA Play-In Tournament begins.

The Hawks (37-42) have secured a spot in the Eastern Conference play-in but have allowed a staggering 119.7 points per game this season—fourth-worst in the NBA. Despite ranking fifth in scoring at 117.9 points per game, their lack of defensive stops continues to be their Achilles’ heel.

“When we do guard, we have a chance,” head coach Quin Snyder said after Tuesday’s 119-112 loss to Orlando. “When we don’t, it makes everything harder.”

Atlanta has allowed 115 or more points in 10 straight games and at least 120 in 42 total contests. During their recent 2-6 skid, they allowed Orlando to shoot 53.5% from the field and surrender 66 first-half points—marking the sixth time in seven games the Hawks allowed 60+ before halftime.

Trae Young continues to do his part, posting 28 points and 10 assists against the Magic, while Onyeka Okongwu tied his career high with 30 points and added 14 boards. Young has notched double-doubles in nine of his last 10 games, and Okongwu now has 11 double-doubles in his past 17.

Nets Lean on Youth in Final Stretch

Brooklyn (26-53) isn’t postseason-bound, but the team is making the most of its final games by developing young talent. In Tuesday’s 119-114 win over New Orleans, the Nets used their 41st different starting lineup of the season—and it paid off.

Trendon Watford led the way with 22 points, including 11 in the third quarter, helping the Nets score a season-high 43 in the period. Rookie Drew Timme posted career highs with 16 points and nine rebounds, while Dariq Whitehead added 14 points and has made 12-of-24 three-pointers over his last three games.

“That’s what we want. We don’t want to do something in one season and then start over,” coach Jordi Fernandez said. “These guys are driving the culture.”

The last time these teams met on March 16, Brooklyn defeated Atlanta 122-114 behind a similar youth-powered performance. Atlanta will be looking to avenge that loss while also trying to find consistency ahead of the postseason.
