Heat Meet Nets, Hope for Positive End to Two-Game Trip Without Butler
While the Brooklyn Nets will be celebrating Vince Carter’s jersey retirement, the Miami Heat are managing internal turmoil surrounding Jimmy Butler, whose future with the franchise remains uncertain ahead of the Feb. 6 trade deadline.
Butler has missed 18 games this season, including eight of the past 11 due to team-imposed suspensions for conduct detrimental to the team. His first suspension came after he requested a trade, sidelining him for seven games from Jan. 4-15, during which Miami went 3-4.
After returning for three games, including a 21-point win over the San Antonio Spurs last Sunday, Butler was suspended again for missing the team flight to Milwaukee on Wednesday. This latest infraction has fueled speculation that his Heat tenure could be ending soon, with the Phoenix Suns rumored as a potential landing spot.

The Heat are 8-12 in their past 20 games since a four-game winning streak in December, with Butler playing in just six of those games. Notably, Miami’s three most lopsided defeats have come since Butler’s trade request became public.
Heat Struggling to Find Consistency Without Butler
Miami heads to Brooklyn following a 125-96 blowout loss to the Milwaukee Bucks on Thursday, a game in which the Heat shot just 37 percent and missed 39 of 51 three-point attempts.
Before the game, coach Erik Spoelstra addressed the team’s mindset moving forward without Butler.
“The point that I made to our team is you get used to it,” Spoelstra said. “Get over it. This is the NBA life. This is the life we chose.”
Miami built a 15-point lead in the first quarter against Milwaukee, only to be outscored 120-76 the rest of the way in a performance that left Bam Adebayo frustrated with the team’s inconsistency.
“That’s the way this team is,” Adebayo said. “Really good and really bad. It’s trying to figure out how we can collectively keep playing good.”
Nets Honor Vince Carter While Struggling at Home
While Miami grapples with off-court drama, Brooklyn will celebrate a franchise legend as Vince Carter becomes the seventh player in Nets history to have his jersey retired.
Carter, who joined the Nets in December 2004, averaged 23.6 points per game during his five-year tenure with the team when it was still based in New Jersey. He remains one of the most electrifying players in franchise history and is thrilled to receive the honor.
“Everybody doesn’t get the honor,” Carter told the New York Post. “I just found out that only seven guys will be up there. This is rare air.”
The current Nets, however, are struggling mightily, having lost nine straight home games after being swept in back-to-back losses to the New York Knicks and Phoenix Suns this week.
Brooklyn’s 108-84 loss to the Suns on Wednesday marked its second-lowest scoring output of the season and the 13th time this year they failed to score 100 points. The team has been severely impacted by injuries, going 6-20 without leading scorer Cam Thomas (left hamstring strain) and 0-10 without Cameron Johnson (right ankle sprain).
Injury Concerns for Brooklyn Continue
Johnson will miss his ninth game in the past 12, with coach Jordi Fernandez confirming he will be reevaluated next week. There is a possibility that D’Angelo Russell could return after sitting out Wednesday’s game to manage his own hamstring injury.
With both teams struggling, Brooklyn looks to snap its home losing streak, while Miami seeks stability amid the Butler saga in a matchup that could have major implications as the trade deadline nears.
