Bulls Take Aim at Spurs After Red-Hot Night of Offense
The Chicago Bulls are coming off a weekend filled with nostalgia and inspiration, as they honored former MVP Derrick Rose in a ceremony on Saturday night. That energy carried over to the court, where the Bulls used a dominant third quarter to rally past the New York Knicks, 139-126.
Bulls Fueled by Rose Tribute
The ceremony celebrating Rose, a Chicago legend, clearly impacted the Bulls’ performance.
“That meant a lot to us to win for him,” said Coby White, who led the team with a career-best nine 3-pointers on 11 attempts. “He’s a local legend; he’s a legend in general. … We wanted to win for him, for sure.”
The Bulls now turn their focus to Monday’s matchup against the San Antonio Spurs, as they seek their third straight victory.
Wembanyama’s Double-Double Overshadowed by OT Loss
San Antonio’s Victor Wembanyama, the top pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, celebrated his 21st birthday with a double-double performance of 20 points and 23 rebounds in a hard-fought game against the Denver Nuggets. However, the Spurs faltered in overtime, losing 122-111.
“I should have done a better job of being more assertive and catching the ball,” Wembanyama said, reflecting on his scoreless OT performance.
Despite the loss, Wembanyama’s presence continues to be a focal point for San Antonio. Acting coach Mitch Johnson emphasized the need for better offensive rhythm late in games.
“We got a little stagnant in mud,” Johnson said.
Veteran Chris Paul, also pushing for consistency, highlighted the importance of execution in crunch time. “You got to be able to score, get a stop, score again, get a stop, and that’s game over,” Paul said.
Bulls Firing on All Cylinders
Chicago delivered one of its best offensive performances of the season against the Knicks, matching a season-high 139 points. White and Zach LaVine each scored 33 points, with LaVine continuing to show his growth as a leader.
“I really, really appreciate the way (Zach) is playing,” Bulls coach Billy Donovan said. “He’s really doing a terrific job of balancing himself and his teammates. … One of the most underrated things about Zach’s game is in his unselfishness.”
The Bulls remain without Ayo Dosunmu (calf) and Torrey Craig (lower leg), but Donovan praised the team’s veterans for stepping up in their absence.
Head-to-Head History
Chicago has dominated the recent series against San Antonio, winning five straight matchups. The last meeting saw the Bulls put up another offensive clinic, defeating the Spurs 139-124 on Dec. 5.
