Jimmy Butler, Warriors Look to Keep Foot on Gas vs. Depleted Mavs
The Golden State Warriors are thriving with Jimmy Butler in the lineup, and they’ll look to extend their success when they visit the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday night.
Butler Boosting Golden State’s Resurgence
Golden State has won two straight with Butler, including a 125-111 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks on Monday. Butler contributed 20 points, nine rebounds, six assists, and four steals, while Stephen Curry exploded for a season-high-tying 38 points.
“I haven’t played basketball in a month,” Butler admitted. “My wind is nowhere close to where it needs to be. I can’t wait until I’m back in basketball shape.”
Butler’s arrival has helped ease the burden on Curry, who has scored at least 30 points in four consecutive games and drained 14 three-pointers in his last two outings.
“Every possession just doesn’t feel as hard,” Curry said. “Opponents have to worry about something else.”
The Warriors had a season-high 16 steals against Milwaukee, showing renewed defensive intensity.
Injury-Ravaged Mavs Struggling to Stay Afloat
The Mavericks have been in turmoil since trading Luka Doncic to the Lakers for a package that included Anthony Davis. Davis suffered a left adductor strain in his first game with Dallas and is expected to miss multiple weeks, adding to the team’s growing injury list.
Dallas also lost center Daniel Gafford to a sprained right knee in Monday’s 129-128 overtime loss to the Sacramento Kings. Gafford will be re-evaluated in two weeks.
“The games keep coming,” Mavericks coach Jason Kidd said. “No one feels sorry for us. We just have to keep fighting.”
Kyrie Irving scored 30 points in Monday’s loss, but Dallas was without key contributors P.J. Washington (ankle) and Caleb Martin (hip). Spencer Dinwiddie and rookie Olivier-Maxence Prosper are being forced into larger roles.
