Warriors, Trail Blazers Meet After Bruising Games
Two teams coming off physical battles against the Detroit Pistons will look for a more free-flowing contest when the Portland Trail Blazers visit the Golden State Warriors on Monday night in San Francisco.
Warriors Look to Build on Strong Stretch
Golden State, which dominated Portland 140-104 on Opening Night, will aim to make it two straight wins against its West Coast rival. The Warriors enter the game with two key advantages: extra rest and momentum.
Golden State is coming off a day off after a bruising 115-110 win over Detroit on Saturday. The contest featured 56 total fouls, with the Warriors converting 33 of 41 free throws. Meanwhile, the Trail Blazers were in action Sunday, falling 119-112 at home to the Pistons in another foul-heavy game that saw 51 total whistles and Portland making 25 of 32 from the line.
The Warriors have won 11 of 13 games since acquiring Jimmy Butler from the Miami Heat, with Butler’s aggressive style energizing the team. He went 6-for-7 at the line against Detroit, while Stephen Curry nailed all 12 of his attempts.
The win against the Pistons also kicked off a seven-game homestand, a welcome break after playing 12 of their previous 14 games on the road.
“I love the fact that we came off that long road trip, six-hour flight (from Brooklyn), 5:30 (p.m.) game against probably the most physical team in the league,” Warriors coach Steve Kerr said. “Thrilled with just the competitive spirit, the energy, the effort that it took to win a key game.”
Trail Blazers Dealing With Injuries, Fatigue
The Trail Blazers are returning from a grueling seven-game road trip and were without key players in Sunday’s loss to Detroit. Centers Deandre Ayton and Robert Williams, as well as forward Deni Avdija (strained quad), were all sidelined. Avdija, however, could return Monday.
With Ayton and Williams out, the game could feature a matchup between two of last year’s top collegiate centers: UConn’s Donovan Clingan and Boston College’s Quinten Post. Despite playing near each other in college, they never faced off at that level.
Portland selected Clingan with the seventh overall pick in the 2024 draft, while Post went 45 picks later. So far, Post has been the more productive scorer (8.2 PPG compared to Clingan’s 5.8 PPG), but Clingan remains focused on his defensive presence.
“You just got to block shots, rebound the ball at a high level, set great screens for your guards, roll to the rim and be active,” Clingan said. “Just be that same player for however minutes (I play).”
With Golden State looking to extend its strong stretch and Portland searching for consistency, Monday’s matchup will be a test of endurance and execution.
