Houston Searching for Stability as VanVleet Nears Return

The Houston Rockets (25-32) have been in a downward spiral this month, largely due to the absence of veteran point guard Fred VanVleet.

Since VanVleet injured his right ankle on Feb. 1, the Rockets have lost seven of ten games, struggling with ball security and offensive consistency.

“Fred is crucial to our whole ecosystem,” Rockets coach Ime Udoka said. “His IQ and playmaking ability set everything up for us.”

VanVleet practiced on Monday and remains a game-time decision for Tuesday’s home matchup against the Milwaukee Bucks (39-21).

If he returns to the lineup, Houston could get a much-needed boost in its attempt to snap Milwaukee’s four-game winning streak.

Turnover Woes Without VanVleet

With VanVleet sidelined, Houston has struggled to organize its offense, rotating between:

  • Jalen Green – Explosive scorer but turnover-prone.
  • Amen Thompson – Athletic but still learning NBA pace.
  • Alperen Sengun – Elite passer but committed a career-high eight turnovers against Minnesota.

VanVleet’s leadership and floor vision have been sorely missed, particularly by Sengun, who has built strong chemistry with him over the past two seasons.

Against a Milwaukee team with a deep, athletic defense, the Rockets will need a steady hand to limit mistakes and create quality shots.

Bucks Finding Their Groove After Trade Deadline Moves

The Bucks have been dominant since the All-Star break, largely thanks to key trade deadline acquisitions.

Milwaukee’s Key Additions:

  • Kyle Kuzma (18.6 PPG, 7.2 RPG) – Adds scoring depth.
  • Kevin Porter Jr. (16.1 PPG, 5.2 APG) – Provides playmaking and defense.
  • Jericho Sims (5.6 RPG, 1.3 BPG) – Solid interior presence.

With Bobby Portis Jr. still serving his 25-game suspension, the Kuzma-Porter duo has helped keep Milwaukee’s second unit strong.

Even when Giannis Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard rest, Milwaukee now has enough firepower to maintain its level of play.

This new rotation was on full display in Monday’s 120-113 win over Miami, where the Bucks overcame a double-digit deficit to secure their fourth straight victory.

What’s at Stake?

For the Rockets:

  • Can they limit turnovers without VanVleet?
  • Can they slow down Milwaukee’s deep rotation?
  • Can Jalen Green and Alperen Sengun carry the offense?

For the Bucks:

  • Can they extend their winning streak to five games?
  • Will Kuzma and Porter continue to provide strong bench play?
  • Can they take advantage of Houston’s struggling backcourt?

Prediction: Can Houston Compete Without VanVleet?

If VanVleet plays, Houston will have a much better chance at controlling the tempo and limiting turnovers.

However, if he remains out, the Bucks’ depth, defense, and offensive firepower could prove too much for the young and inconsistent Rockets.

Milwaukee is on a roll, and unless Houston delivers a near-perfect performance, expect the Bucks to pull away late.
