The Lean

As the underdogs with a spread of +4, we recommend going with the Trail Blazers on the point spread. We not only see them covering the spread but also have a strong likelihood of winning this one outright, especially if you’re seeking a higher payout on the moneyline.

Regarding the over/under, the current line is set at 228, and our model predicts the Trail Blazers and 76ers to score a combined 237 points. We recommend betting on the over.

Grimes’ Breakout Game Sparks 76ers Ahead of Matchup vs. Blazers

The Philadelphia 76ers are finally back in the win column after snapping a nine-game losing streak, thanks to a career night from Quentin Grimes. Now, the Sixers will try to keep their momentum going Monday when they host the Portland Trail Blazers, who are in the middle of a grueling seven-game road trip.

Grimes, acquired last month in a trade involving Dallas, erupted for 44 points on 18-of-24 shooting in Philadelphia’s win over Golden State on Saturday, surpassing his previous career-high of 30 points set earlier this season.

“He was on one tonight,” Sixers coach Nick Nurse said. “It’s pretty cool to see.”

Grimes has been a steady contributor since arriving in Philadelphia, scoring in double figures in seven of his first 10 games. His emergence is crucial for a Sixers team without Joel Embiid (knee) for the rest of the season.

“It’s a big confidence boost,” Grimes said after his career night. “We had to come together collectively within the last two, three minutes of the game. … We could have lost that game easily but we stuck together, stayed tough, and that feels like a game that we can build on.”

76ers Need More From Maxey

While Grimes shined against Golden State, Tyrese Maxey struggled, finishing with just five points on 2-of-14 shooting.

Maxey has been the Sixers’ primary offensive leader since Embiid’s injury, averaging 25.4 points per game this season. Philadelphia will need a much better performance from him against a Trail Blazers defense that has been inconsistent all season.

Blazers Blow Lead, Look to Bounce Back on the Road

Portland had a golden opportunity for a statement win on Sunday against Cleveland, leading by 18 points in the third quarter. However, the Cavaliers stormed back to win 133-129 in overtime, snapping the Blazers’ four-game winning streak.

“I’m obviously super proud of the way we fought,” Blazers coach Chauncey Billups said. “But we were fighting as well.”

Despite the loss, Deni Avdija delivered a historic performance, posting a career-first triple-double with 30 points, 12 rebounds, and 10 assists.

“It’s hard for me to think about the triple-double right now because I wanted to win,” Avdija said. “I don’t think about it right now, but maybe tomorrow it’ll make me smile a little bit.”

Before Sunday’s loss, Portland had won four straight, including three consecutive road victories. The Trail Blazers are now four games into their seven-game road trip, which continues with tough matchups against Boston and Oklahoma City before finally returning home.

Season Series: 76ers vs. Trail Blazers

Monday marks the second and final meeting between these teams this season.

  • Dec. 30 (in Portland): Philadelphia won 125-103, behind 37 points from Embiid and 23 from Maxey.

Without Embiid, Philadelphia will need to find new ways to attack Portland, while the Blazers look to avenge their previous blowout loss.

Key Matchups to Watch

Quentin Grimes vs. Portland’s Defense
Grimes is coming off a career-best performance, and Portland will need to find an answer to slow him down.

Tyrese Maxey vs. Portland’s Guards
Maxey had a rough night against Golden State, and Portland will try to keep him out of rhythm again. However, if Maxey finds his form, the Blazers could be in trouble.

Deni Avdija vs. Tobias Harris
Avdija is playing some of the best basketball of his career, but Harris provides a veteran scoring presence that could give Philadelphia the edge.
