The Magic Can Win If…

Orlando fell to 24-24 on the season after a 125-119 road loss to Miami on Monday. The Magic, who were favored by 1 point, not only lost but also failed to cover the spread. The game’s total points of 244.5 far exceeded the pre-game O/U line of 205.5.

Orlando appeared to be in control after a 14-0 run stretched their lead from 81-79 to 93-81. However, they faltered in the 4th quarter, where they were outscored 29-20 by the Heat.

Franz Wagner led the Magic with 29 points in their 125-119 loss to the Heat, shooting 40% from the field and hitting 2 threes at 20%. Paolo Banchero and Tristan da Silva each added 17 points, with Da Silva connecting on 5 threes at 62.5% efficiency. Overall, the Magic made 14 threes, shooting 35.9% from deep and 45.9% from the field.

Wagner scored 8 points in both the 2nd and 3rd quarters, adding 4 in overtime. Banchero contributed 6 points in the 3rd, while Da Silva scored 6 in both the 1st and 2nd quarters. Anthony Black added 5 points in the 3rd and 4th quarters.

Despite a solid defensive effort in the 3rd quarter, the Magic couldn’t contain the Heat, allowing 125 points on 52% shooting in Monday’s loss. Orlando gave up 27 points in the 1st quarter, 28 in the 2nd, and 29 in the 4th.

The Magic allowed 15 threes at a 36% clip and sent the Heat to the line 21 times, where they made 14 free throws. Orlando finished with 35 defensive rebounds, 9 steals, and 4 blocks.

  • Although Orlando has a straight up record of 3-7 in their last ten road games, they have not held up as well vs the spread going 3-7. The team averaged 101 points per game in these games.
  • As the betting favorite, the Magic have an ATS mark of just 1-2 in their last three games. Orlando posted a straight up mark of 1-2 in these matchups.
  • Over their last three games, the Magic have an over/under record of 2-1 and are 1-2 vs. the spread.

The Trail Blazers Can Win If…

Portland improved to 18-29 on the season with a 125-112 win over the Bucks on Tuesday. The Trail Blazers were +5.5 point underdogs at home but not only won, they covered the spread. The game’s total of 237 points went over the line of 231.5.

After trailing 36-31 after the 1st quarter, Portland took control by winning the 2nd quarter 33-25. They extended their lead to 97-89 going into the 4th and put the game away with a 12-0 run, stretching the score from 102-92 to 114-92.

Deni Avdija led the Trail Blazers to a win over the Bucks with 30 points and 9 rebounds, shooting 55.6% from the field and hitting 3 threes at 42.9%. Anfernee Simons added 25 points and 7 assists, connecting on 4 threes at a 50% rate.

  • In their last five games as the betting underdog, the Trail Blazers have a strong straight up record of 4-1. In addition, their ATS record was 5-0 in these scenarios.
  • In their last five games, the Trail Blazers have an over/under record of 2-2-1 and are 3-2 vs. the spread.

The Lean

As the underdogs with a spread of +5.5, we recommend going with the Trail Blazers on the point spread. We not only see them covering the spread but also have a strong likelihood of winning this one outright, especially if you’re seeking a higher payout on the moneyline.

Right now, the over/under line for the game is sitting at 212.5 and given that our model is projecting 264 points between the teams, we like the over.

Magic Hope to Begin a Big Run, Starting in Portland

The Orlando Magic are still searching for rhythm after regaining their key players from injury, and they’ll attempt to snap their recent slump when they face the Portland Trail Blazers on Thursday night.

Magic Struggling Despite Return of Stars

Orlando (23-24) has dropped six of its past seven games, even with the return of Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner, who both missed extended time with oblique injuries.

Banchero came back on Jan. 10, and Wagner followed 13 days later, but winning basketball has been elusive since their return. Wagner believes the team is still adjusting to lineup changes:

“I thought we had great stretches in the game,” Wagner said after Orlando’s 125-119 double-overtime loss to Miami on Monday. “We just have to improve and get better at it, and we’ll be fine.”

  • Wagner had 29 points and 8 rebounds in the loss to the Heat.
  • Banchero struggled with 17 points on 7-of-21 shooting.
  • Tristan da Silva (17 points) provided a spark off the bench.

Orlando could also be without Jalen Suggs, who returned from a 10-game absence due to a back injury but is now dealing with a quad contusion. He is questionable for Thursday’s game.

Recent Matchup: Portland Dominated Orlando

Portland crushed the Magic 101-79 last Thursday, holding Orlando to one of its worst offensive performances of the season.

Orlando now gets a chance for revenge and a much-needed win to stay in the Eastern Conference playoff race.

Young Stars Set for All-Star Weekend

Both teams will have a presence at All-Star Weekend, as:

  • Tristan da Silva (Magic) and Scoot Henderson (Blazers) were selected for the Rising Stars showcase.

da Silva: 8.8 PPG, 4.2 RPG, 1.8 APG
Henderson: 12.3 PPG, 3.0 RPG, 5.2 APG

What’s at Stake?

  • Magic: Looking to stop their slide and regain their early-season form.
  • Blazers: Hoping to extend their hot streak and inch closer to a play-in spot.

Tip-off is set for 10:00 PM ET in Portland.
