Victor Wembanyama Leads Spurs Against Trail Blazers Amid Health Improvements
The San Antonio Spurs head to Portland on Friday night to face the Trail Blazers, with rookie sensation Victor Wembanyama aiming to continue his impressive form after using a four-day break to address back issues that have intermittently hindered his play.
Wembanyama’s Health and Stellar Performance
Wembanyama, the 7-foot-3 phenom, has been dealing with back discomfort, which caused him to miss a game against the Sacramento Kings on Dec. 6 and briefly exit the Dec. 8 matchup against the New Orleans Pelicans. However, the time off has been a boon for his recovery.
“Time off has been really beneficial for us,” Wembanyama said. “Beneficial for me as I can keep from getting hit. … I do feel better.”
Despite his back issues, Wembanyama has been sensational, averaging 23.6 points, 10.4 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 3.4 blocked shots across 19 games. His recent outings include a streak of four straight double-doubles, including a triple-double.
Against the Pelicans, Wembanyama played 26 minutes and recorded 25 points, 10 rebounds, and three blocks, helping San Antonio snap a three-game losing streak with a 121-116 victory.
Trail Blazers Seek Defensive Stability
Portland enters the game on a four-game skid and has dropped eight of its past 10 games. Their most recent outing was a 107-98 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday. The Trail Blazers have struggled defensively, allowing an average of 135 points in the first three games of their current losing streak before showing some improvement against the Lakers.

“Defensively, our pressure has lightened up,” coach Chauncey Billups said. “I think we have gotten a little lax defensively.”
The potential return of key big men could bolster Portland’s defense. Robert Williams III (concussion) returned to practice on Thursday and has one final test to clear before playing. Meanwhile, rookie Donovan Clingan (knee) may also be available after missing the last seven games. Clingan, the No. 7 overall pick, has shown promise, averaging 5.8 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 17 minutes per game.
“I want to bring a little more energy, bring a little more pop and fire,” Clingan said. “Run the floor, block shots, rebound and play defense to help the team win some more games.”
Spurs Face Additional Injury Concerns
San Antonio’s victory over New Orleans came at a cost, as forwards Keldon Johnson (calf) and Zach Collins (back) exited the game due to injuries. Their statuses for Friday’s game remain uncertain as of Thursday afternoon.
Season Series So Far
The Spurs won the first meeting between these teams on Nov. 7, securing a 118-105 home victory. They’ll face off again in San Antonio on Dec. 21. Wembanyama’s performance will be pivotal as the Spurs aim to maintain their edge in the season series.
What to Watch For
- Wembanyama’s Impact: How will Wembanyama’s improved health influence his ability to dominate both ends of the floor?
- Portland’s Defensive Adjustments: Can the potential return of Williams and Clingan help the Trail Blazers tighten up their defense and contain San Antonio’s offense?
- Injury Updates: The availability of Keldon Johnson and Zach Collins for San Antonio could play a significant role in determining the outcome.
Both teams are looking to establish consistency and overcome their respective challenges, making Friday’s game a compelling showdown between a rising star and a team striving for defensive improvement.
