Raptors Hope to Wipe Out Memory of Last Meeting With Grizzlies

The Toronto Raptors will be looking for redemption when they host the Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday night. The last time these teams met, Memphis set a franchise record for points, embarrassing Toronto 155-126 on Dec. 26.

Since that blowout loss, the Raptors (19-31) have found their stride, winning eight of their last 11 games. However, they will have to bounce back quickly after a 121-115 home loss to the New York Knicks on Tuesday.

Toronto Showing Signs of Growth

Despite falling behind by 23 points against the Knicks, the Raptors rallied late to pull within one point with 3:17 left before ultimately coming up short.

“I’m really proud of how we kept our composure during the whole game,” said Toronto coach Darko Rajakovic.

Toronto’s young players showed promise, particularly Jamal Shead, who had 16 points and nine assists in just 23 minutes off the bench.

“I think that’s a testament to us,” Shead said. “We didn’t shy away from it. I think we accepted the challenge and we looked forward to it.”

However, injuries remain an issue for Toronto:

  • Jakob Poeltl (hip pointer) played just 15 minutes before being held out in the second half.
  • RJ Barrett (concussion protocol) and Chris Boucher (illness) were inactive on Tuesday.

Memphis Riding a Hot Streak

Unlike Toronto, the Grizzlies (26-24) are one of the hottest teams in the NBA right now, winning nine of their last 10 games.

In their most recent outing, Memphis cruised to a 128-109 win over the San Antonio Spurs on Monday.

  • Jaren Jackson Jr. led the way with 31 points.
  • GG Jackson added 27 points off the bench.
  • Ja Morant finished with 25 points.

Memphis has dealt with its fair share of injuries, but new contributors have stepped up. GG Jackson, who missed the first 42 games of the season after offseason foot surgery, has become a valuable piece in the rotation.

“Really my first injury ever that took me away from the sport, so definitely a lot of mental lapses, a lot of mental battles,” Jackson said.

Brandon Clarke (back) and Desmond Bane (ankle) were out Monday and are questionable for Wednesday’s game.

Zach Edey Returns to Canada

The spotlight in Toronto will be on Grizzlies rookie Zach Edey, a Toronto native and former Purdue star.

  • Edey had 16 points and 14 rebounds against San Antonio.
  • He put up 21 points and 16 rebounds in Memphis’ win over Toronto in December.

Edey was drafted ninth overall by Memphis and has impressed his fellow Canadians, including Kelly Olynyk, RJ Barrett, and Chris Boucher.

“To see his development, from seeing him in high school to college, and then just how much he’s grown, it’s amazing,” Olynyk said. “He wants to get better, he’s always asking questions, always putting in extra work.”

Game Outlook

  • Toronto is playing better basketball than when these teams last met. However, injuries could impact the Raptors’ ability to compete inside against Edey and Jaren Jackson Jr..
  • Memphis is in peak form, having won nine of 10 games, and looks to sweep the season series against Toronto.
  • Raptors’ young core will be tested against Ja Morant and a deeper Grizzlies lineup.

Toronto will need to show improvement on defense to avoid another blowout against a surging Memphis team.
