Jazz Shoot for More ‘Cohesion,’ Face Nuggets’ Struggling Defense
The Utah Jazz, in the midst of a rebuild, face off against the defending champion Denver Nuggets on Monday night in Salt Lake City. Despite vastly different trajectories, both teams are searching for consistency as they square off for the third time this season.
Optimism Amid Jazz’s Rebuild
The Jazz (7-23) are working to develop a young core and improve team chemistry, even as losses pile up. Utah has dropped three straight games, most recently falling 114-111 to Philadelphia on Saturday, but head coach Will Hardy sees progress.
“The cohesion of the group on both sides of the ball has grown a lot in the last couple of weeks,” Hardy said. “I think the way that our team is communicating with each other has continued to grow. I think we’re playing some good basketball.”
Utah features a balanced scoring attack with six players averaging double figures, led by Lauri Markkanen’s 19.7 points per game. John Collins (17.7 ppg), Collin Sexton (17.3 ppg), and rookie Keyonte George (16.2 ppg) bolster the offensive efforts, while Walker Kessler anchors the interior with 10.9 rebounds per game.

Nuggets’ Defensive Struggles
Denver (17-13) has been inconsistent this season, particularly on defense. After giving up a season-high 149 points to Cleveland on Friday, the Nuggets allowed Detroit to score 32 fourth-quarter points in Saturday’s 134-121 win. The defensive lapses, especially from the reserves, have been a recurring issue.
Aaron Gordon’s absence due to a right calf strain has compounded Denver’s challenges. The forward is expected to miss his third consecutive game, while Jamal Murray has battled injuries throughout the season.
Murray, who scored a season-high 34 points against Detroit, believes the team is finding its rhythm.
“I can see from the start of the season to now we haven’t been amazing. Everybody is starting to finally click, everybody is starting to be more comfortable,” Murray said. “I strive to make shots every night, but I can still impact the game if I’m not making shots.”
Jokic Leading the Way
Nikola Jokic continues to be the focal point for Denver, leading the team in scoring (30.8), rebounding (12.5), and assists (9.5). His all-around brilliance keeps the Nuggets competitive, while Michael Porter Jr. (18.6 ppg) provides additional scoring punch.
Previous Matchups and Key Trends
Denver has dominated the season series so far, winning 129-103 at home on Nov. 2 and 122-103 in Salt Lake City on Nov. 27.
For Utah, this game represents another opportunity to measure progress and build on Hardy’s vision of improved cohesion. For Denver, the focus will be on tightening defensive play and maintaining their hold in the Western Conference standings.
Both teams have plenty to prove in Monday’s clash as they aim to address their respective weaknesses and build momentum heading into the new year.
