The Lean

As the underdogs with a spread of +10.5, we recommend going with the Jazz on the point spread. We not only see them covering the spread but also have a strong likelihood of winning this one outright, especially if you’re seeking a higher payout on the moneyline.

As for the total, the line is currently sitting at 232 and our model has the Pistons and Jazz finishing with a combined 263 points. Our pick is to take the over.

Jazz Searching for Answers After Disappointing Loss

The Utah Jazz are looking for a refocusing moment as they prepare to host the Detroit Pistons on Monday night.

Coming off a 128-121 loss to the New Orleans Pelicans, Utah coach Will Hardy didn’t mince words when expressing his frustration with his team’s lackluster defensive performance.

“It’s a moment of refocusing for everybody who wants to play more,” Hardy said after Sunday’s game.

The Jazz, missing key veterans Lauri Markkanen, John Collins, Walker Kessler, Collin Sexton, and Jordan Clarkson, had a golden opportunity for younger players to step up. But despite a furious fourth-quarter rally that gave them a six-point lead, they ultimately fell short.

Hardy was particularly disappointed with Utah’s poor defensive execution, allowing New Orleans to outscore them 76-56 in the paint.

“I love all the guys in the locker room; they’re human beings. It wasn’t their best tonight,” Hardy said. “But the frustrating part is that there’s so much opportunity on our team right now … that opportunity deserves to be met with the desperation that it deserves.”

One bright spot for Utah was reserve big man Oscar Tshiebwe, who posted 16 points, 13 rebounds, and a plus-25 rating in just 20 minutes.

Hardy praised Tshiebwe’s effort, particularly on defense against Zion Williamson.

“He played incredibly hard and gave our team a really big lift,” Hardy said. “His strength really showed up in those moments.”

With just three wins in their last 11 games, Utah will need to find more consistent defensive intensity if they hope to stop a red-hot Pistons team.

Pistons Bring Winning Formula to Utah

The Detroit Pistons have won nine of their last ten games, emerging as one of the hottest teams in the NBA.

Detroit is coming off a dominant 115-94 win over Brooklyn on Saturday, despite committing a season-high 27 turnovers.

Coach JB Bickerstaff credited his team’s mental toughness for their recent success.

“It’s a mental toughness thing,” Bickerstaff said. “One of our core values is toughness. It’s not just a physical thing, it’s a mental thing. You always have a reason to blame someone else or have a way out. Our guys haven’t made excuses. They’ve come out every single night and competed at a high level.”

The Pistons got balanced contributions in their win over the Nets, with:

  • Tobias Harris (18 points, 9 rebounds)
  • Jalen Duren (18 points, 11 rebounds)
  • Malik Beasley (18 points)
  • Cade Cunningham (15 points, 9 assists, 7 rebounds)

Cunningham took over in the fourth quarter, scoring nine of his 15 points in the final frame to help Detroit pull away.

Bickerstaff also emphasized his team’s chippy, aggressive style, which has helped them compete at a high level.

“That’s kinda who we are. We play kinda teetering on that edge, and it brings our guys so much juice,” he said. “When it does get that way, I feel comfortable that our guys know how to execute and play through it.”

Key Matchups to Watch

Oscar Tshiebwe vs. Jalen Duren
Tshiebwe impressed against New Orleans, but he’ll have another tough test against the physical Duren, who is averaging a double-double this season.

Cade Cunningham vs. Utah’s Backcourt
Cunningham has been the leader of Detroit’s offense, and Utah’s young guards will have their hands full trying to slow him down.

Jazz’s Perimeter Defense vs. Pistons’ Shooting
Utah allowed too many easy baskets inside against the Pelicans. If they can’t contain Detroit’s mid-range and three-point shooters, it could be another long night.

What’s at Stake?

For Utah, a win would:

  • Help them regain momentum after a rough stretch.
  • Improve their record in their nine-game homestand (currently 3-5).
  • Give younger players another opportunity to prove themselves.

For Detroit, a win would:

  • Extend their red-hot streak to 10 wins in 11 games.
  • Provide momentum as they begin a four-game road trip.
  • Show they can stay focused despite turnover struggles.

Can the Jazz Refocus, or Will Detroit Stay Hot?

The Jazz need a spark, and Hardy is challenging his players to bring more energy and defensive intensity. Meanwhile, Detroit is playing some of its best basketball, looking to continue its remarkable turnaround.

Will Utah respond to Hardy’s call for urgency, or will the Pistons keep rolling? The answer unfolds Monday night in Salt Lake City.
