The Indiana Pacers head to the nation’s capital to face the Washington Wizards on Wednesday, looking to enter the All-Star break on a high note.
Can Indiana Bounce Back Before the Break?
Indiana (31-24) has lost three of its last four games, including a 128-115 home defeat to the Knicks on Tuesday. The Pacers struggled from beyond the arc, shooting just 9-for-31 (29 percent), but head coach Rick Carlisle was more concerned with the team’s defensive effort.
“We really struggled on defense,” Carlisle said. “We had a hard time getting anything going, and the calls weren’t going our way. It was just a difficult night.”
Pascal Siakam has been a bright spot for Indiana, scoring 24 points against the Knicks. He has eclipsed 20 points in seven of his last eight games and leads the team in both scoring (20.8 ppg) and rebounding (7.4 rpg).
“We’ve just got to play better,” Siakam said. “As long as we recognize the things that we’re not doing well and try to fix them, I think we’ll be OK.”
Tyrese Haliburton, who averages 17.8 points and 8.5 assists, will be another key piece as the Pacers try to improve their defensive consistency.
Wizards Struggling but Showing Fight
Washington (9-44) has lost three straight games following a brief three-game win streak to start February. The Wizards are on pace for their worst season in franchise history but have shown improvement offensively, averaging 117.3 points per game this month.
In Monday’s 131-121 home loss to San Antonio, the Wizards fell behind by 18 points early but fought back to briefly take the lead.
“Loved the fight, loved the competitiveness, didn’t love the start,” Wizards coach Brian Keefe said. “Our fight was good.”
Jordan Poole leads the team with 20.7 points per game, though he struggled on Monday, shooting just 4-for-18. With second-leading scorer Kyle Kuzma now in Milwaukee, Washington will lean more on Malcolm Brogdon (12.7 ppg) and rookie Bilal Coulibaly (12.6 ppg) for offensive production.
