Sinking Kings Look to Right the Ship Against Slumping Wizards
The Sacramento Kings are quickly running out of time to turn their season around. Clinging to the final play-in spot in the Western Conference, the Kings (36-39) head to Washington on Wednesday hoping to stop the bleeding after losing six of their last seven games.
While Sacramento is still in the playoff picture — sitting 10th in the West, just a half-game behind Dallas and one ahead of Phoenix — their recent performances haven’t inspired much confidence. The Kings began their six-game road trip with a demoralizing 121-91 loss to Orlando followed by a heartbreaking 111-109 collapse against Indiana, a game in which they surrendered a 16-point second-half lead.

“We just have to make sure all of us — not only (Monk) — all of us are taking care of the basketball,” interim head coach Doug Christie said after the loss to Indiana. “That’s big, especially against these teams where the margin for error is so, so small. Those are not the points we can give away.”
Despite the loss, Domantas Sabonis continued his stellar play, posting 25 points and 16 rebounds against his former team. DeMar DeRozan added 31 points and eight assists, while Zach LaVine chipped in 20 points. However, Malik Monk struggled mightily for the second game in a row, finishing with just five points on 2-of-14 shooting and five turnovers.
“Malik is going to make shots,” Christie assured. “This is two tough games for him in a row, but it’s not anything he hasn’t faced before. I’m extremely confident in that.”
Wizards Hope to Snap Skid on Home Stand
If there’s any team struggling more than the Kings, it’s the Washington Wizards (16-59), who have lost eight of their last nine and are 0-3 on their current five-game homestand. Though their playoff hopes vanished long ago, the Wizards continue to search for chemistry and consistency in a rebuilding season.
Jordan Poole was a rare bright spot in Monday’s 120-94 loss to Miami, drilling seven three-pointers en route to 35 points. However, the rest of the team combined to shoot just 24-of-69 from the field and 6-of-30 from deep.
“To be honest, we missed some shots (Monday). We were just out of rhythm, could never really get it going,” said Wizards head coach Brian Keefe. “We missed some chippies, some easy ones around the rim. We missed some open 3s. … Sometimes the game is going to go that way.”
Poole, who made just 4-of-11 shots for 11 points in the teams’ last meeting back in January, has quietly put together a career-best season from beyond the arc, shooting 38.1 percent from deep.
In that January meeting, Sacramento cruised to a 123-100 victory over Washington behind dominant performances from Sabonis (29 points, 18 rebounds), DeRozan (24 points), and Monk (23 points).
With the Kings fighting to stay in the playoff race, they can’t afford a slip-up against a team already focused on the future.
