Baylor Bids to Keep Coleman Hawkins, Kansas State in Check
Seventh-seeded Baylor will look to strengthen its NCAA Tournament chances when it takes on No. 10 seed Kansas State in a Big 12 Conference tournament second-round matchup on Wednesday night in Kansas City, Mo.
Baylor Aiming to Secure NCAA Tournament Spot
Baylor (18-13) enters the tournament after a tough 65-61 home loss to Houston, the Big 12 regular-season champion, on Saturday. V.J. Edgecombe led the Bears with 23 points and three steals, while Norchad Omier posted a double-double with 13 points and 16 rebounds.

Omier has been a consistent force for Baylor, averaging 15.6 points and 10.7 rebounds per game this season. Edgecombe, named the Associated Press Big 12 Freshman of the Year on Tuesday, has also been a major contributor, averaging 15.0 points per game.
Baylor head coach Scott Drew believes his team’s resume is strong enough for an at-large NCAA Tournament bid but wants to make sure there is no doubt.
“As far as the NCAA Tournament? I would say that our resumé speaks for itself,” Drew said. “We have good non-conference wins. We went .500 in one of the top conferences in the country. So do I feel like that’s good enough? Yes, but we always want to leave no doubt and we want to improve our seed if possible.”
Kansas State Looks to Continue Momentum
Kansas State (16-16) advanced to the second round after a 71-66 win over Arizona State on Tuesday night. The Wildcats received a season-high 26 points from Coleman Hawkins, while Dug McDaniel added 14 points. Brendan Hausen and Max Jones chipped in 10 points each.
David N’Guessan, Kansas State’s leading scorer this season (13.3 PPG, 7.2 RPG), was limited to just five points against Arizona State due to foul trouble.
“I loved Coleman’s aggressiveness — I loved all the guys’ aggressiveness,” Kansas State coach Jerome Tang said. “I thought they took advantage of how we prepared for this and some of the things that we did and some of the things we didn’t do. So I thought they gave us the game that it takes for playing in March.”
Kansas State closed the regular season with five losses in its final eight games but remains a dangerous team in the tournament.
Baylor won the lone regular-season meeting between the teams, defeating Kansas State by eight points at home on Jan. 22. After that loss, the Wildcats responded with a six-game winning streak that included victories over four ranked opponents.
What’s Next?
The winner of Wednesday’s matchup will advance to face No. 2 seed Texas Tech in the Big 12 quarterfinals on Thursday.
