No. 9 Marquette Eyes Sweep Against Butler in Big East Showdown
The Golden Eagles, riding a hot streak, take on Butler again as they aim for another dominant performance in the Big East.
Marquette Looks to Extend Surge
No. 9 Marquette (17-3, 8-1 Big East) has won eight of its last nine games, starting with an 80-70 victory over Butler on Dec. 18. The Golden Eagles head to Indianapolis on Tuesday, aiming to repeat their dominance.
Marquette enters the contest following an 87-74 victory over Villanova on Friday. Stevie Mitchell matched a career-high with 21 points, bouncing back from a cold stretch in his previous two games. “Stevie’s always highly motivated,” Marquette coach Shaka Smart said of the senior. “He ended up exactly where he should have.”
Mitchell received support from Chase Ross (18 points) and Kam Jones (16 points). The Golden Eagles excelled defensively, forcing 13 turnovers and converting them into 16 points. They also protected the ball, committing just six turnovers.
Against Butler in December, Marquette dominated in the paint with a 52-24 scoring edge and a 38-27 rebounding advantage. Jones led the Golden Eagles with 23 points, while David Joplin and Mitchell added 15 apiece.

Butler Seeks Upset Behind Brooks
Butler (9-11, 2-7 Big East) has shown flashes of improvement, winning two of its last three games. The Bulldogs snapped their skid with victories over Seton Hall and DePaul, fueled by standout performances from Pierre Brooks II.
Brooks tallied 29 points and 13 rebounds in an 86-69 win over DePaul on Saturday, bouncing back from a two-point outing against UConn earlier in the week. “He kept defending even when the shots weren’t falling,” Butler coach Thad Matta said of Brooks.
Jahmyl Telfort (18 points), Finley Bizjack (17 points), and Andre Screen (15 points) also contributed in the DePaul win. Butler will need that balanced scoring to contend with Marquette’s firepower.
Despite shooting 51.1 percent from the floor in their last meeting, Butler struggled to keep pace with Marquette’s inside dominance. The Bulldogs hope to limit turnovers and play more disciplined defense in this rematch.
