Utah and Butler Set for Showdown in Inaugural College Basketball Crown
The stage is set in Las Vegas as Utah and Butler prepare to tip off in the opening round of the first-ever College Basketball Crown. But for Utah, this game comes at a time of massive transition and uncertainty within the program.
Earlier this month, Utah made headlines by parting ways with head coach Craig Smith and bringing in former Ute and Dallas Mavericks assistant Alex Jensen as the new face of the program. Jensen inked a six-year deal worth $3.6 million annually, signaling a new era for Utah basketball.
In the wake of that decision, the Utes have experienced a significant roster shake-up. Seven players have entered the transfer portal, including key starters Lawson Lovering and Jake Wahlin, along with important contributors Keanu Dawes, Hunter Erickson, and Miro Little.
“I’m 100 percent all in,” Eilert told KSL.com. “I’m excited about it. I know players have to make decisions, but I think it would be special to have another opportunity to battle with these guys.”
Despite the upheaval, Utah (16-16) accepted an invitation to the inaugural College Basketball Crown, joining four other Big 12 programs in the 16-team field. Interim coach Josh Eilert, who served as Craig Smith’s lead assistant, will take the helm in Vegas while Jensen finishes the NBA season with the Mavericks.
Butler Eyes Stability Amid Tough Season
While Utah is navigating internal turmoil, Butler enters the College Basketball Crown with a more stable foundation — albeit coming off a rough stretch. The Bulldogs (14-19) have seen only one player, walk-on guard Ryder Cate, hit the transfer portal so far.

Butler’s season has been a rollercoaster. After a promising 7-1 start, the Bulldogs suffered a crippling nine-game losing streak, eventually losing five of their last six games. Head coach Thad Matta, now in his third season during his second stint with the program, is still seeking consistency from his squad.
One bright spot for Butler has been the play of Jahmyl Telfort. Over the past 10 games, Telfort has emerged as a go-to option, averaging 16.8 points per game while shooting an impressive 53 percent from the field.
“Telfort gives us that edge — a guy who can create his own shot and stretch defenses,” Matta said following a recent practice. “We’ll need that spark in Vegas.”
Key Matchup to Watch
Utah will look to counter Butler’s offense with perimeter shooting, relying heavily on Gabe Madsen. Madsen has been a consistent deep threat, averaging three made 3-pointers per game and 15.1 points overall. However, his 32 percent shooting from beyond the arc leaves room for improvement if Utah hopes to make a run in the CBC.
As for history, Butler holds a 3-1 lead in the all-time series against Utah, with the Utes’ lone win coming way back in 1964.
Fans looking for a fresh postseason narrative should keep an eye on this game, as both programs aim to close their seasons with momentum and a glimpse into the future.
