Cincinnati Aims for Payback Against Utah

The Cincinnati Bearcats got their revenge against BYU on Saturday. Now, they’ll try to do the same against Utah when they host the Utes in a Big 12 showdown on Tuesday night.

Cincinnati Rolling After Big Win Over BYU

Cincinnati (14-9, 4-8 Big 12) enters this matchup on a two-game winning streak, a rarity in their first Big 12 season. On Saturday, they trailed BYU at halftime but dominated the second half with a 22-2 run, cruising to an 84-66 win. That avenged a 28-point blowout loss to BYU just two weeks earlier.

Now, they’ll try to settle the score against Utah (13-10, 5-7 Big 12), a team that stunned them 69-66 in Salt Lake City on Jan. 28 despite 19 turnovers and a 14-0 Cincinnati run in the second half.

Jizzle James went off for a season-high 24 points against BYU, while Josh Reed stepped up with a career-best 12 points off the bench. With back-to-back conference wins under their belt, the Bearcats are chasing their first-ever three-game winning streak in Big 12 play.

Cincinnati coach Wes Miller believes Reed is just getting started.

Utah Struggling on the Road

While Cincinnati is surging, Utah is looking for answers after a 71-62 loss at West Virginia on Saturday. The Utes are just 1-5 on the road in Big 12 play, a troubling trend heading into one of the toughest environments in the conference.

“You’ve got to play well on the road,” Utah coach Craig Smith said. “You’ve got to eliminate losing. They just made a few more plays than us to come out on top.”

Madsen Brothers Return to Cincinnati

This game marks a homecoming of sorts for Gabe and Mason Madsen, the Utah twin brothers who started their college careers at Cincinnati.

  • Mason Madsen played two seasons with the Bearcats, averaging 3.9 points per game and leading the team in 3-point percentage (36.3%) in 2021-22 before transferring to Boston College and then Utah.
  • Gabe Madsen saw limited action in Cincinnati before transferring to Utah, where he has become a key contributor.

The Matchup

Cincinnati has the momentum, but Utah is desperate to get back on track. Can the Bearcats keep rolling and finally win three straight in Big 12 play? Or will the Utes spoil the party again? One thing’s for sure: This one has revenge written all over it.
